Cutting Preparations from Sellers

I expect more from them in cutting quality, length, and number of nodes. Please do not cut the bottom of the cutting with no room to spare right against the bottom node! Especially if you are only sending a cutting with two or three nodes.

Do not wash, sanitize, or wrap anything. Just label and put them in a ziploc dry. No wet towels! A dry towel is okay to absorb condensation. No parafilm!! No wax!

(I may allow wax if they have to be stored by the seller before shipping, but it is a pain to get off, and I often have to cut them.)
I normally wax the ends to preserve moisture. And so the person getting them does not have to if they plan to store. But I do leave plenty of wood below and above the first and last node. It allows for the person getting the cutting to do a fresh cut before rooting.

Anytime I see cuttings individually wrapped in Saran Wrap my blood starts to boil.

I would love for sellers to scrub there cuttings in Physan or bleach. Then like OTBP or Harvey with the label and wrapped in cling film or like Garden C did with label on the ziploc bags. I like mine double wrapped, so like wrapped in cling film and then put in a ziploc.

I have received cuttings of all forms and preparations or non-preparations.

I expect:

1. Clearly labeled cuttings. I understand sellers often have to process a lot of cuttings at the same time. Label the cuttings, either individually or by group should be the top priority. If it is done by group, try to do it in a way so they won't mix up easily. No one wants to spend years growing the wrong cuttings and have to track down the seller down the road.

2. Check the conditions of the cuttings before sending. If there are loose bark or rot or empty pith on the cut ends, it is probably not a good idea to send them to someone else. Use those as smoking chips instead. It is a waste of money and time to send these cuttings.

3. Notify receivers about the incoming package. You would be surprised how many times I have received "surprised" cuttings or even plants with no email, message about the incoming mail. Sending tracking number would be helpful or a simple notification ahead of time would help. One time, the "surprised" cuttings were in the oversized mailbox for 5 days in single digits. I only knew about it because the sender contacted me 5 days after the "delivery" and didn't hear anything from me. I don't expect sender to check weather forecast of each receiver but notifying the receiver ahead of time would prompt this kind of checking naturally.

If the cuttings were collected recently, wrap them in a dry paper towel or newspaper would help absorb moisture release during transit and just put them in a ziploc bag. I prefer no cleaning, no bleaching, no soaking, no individual saran wrapped cuttings. I do my own cleaning, bleaching before storage. If the cuttings are thin, it is probably a good idea to wrap them with bubble sheet or put them in a bubble envelope.

My God, it takes more time to unwrap them than to prepare them and pot them! 😂

I tried using a razor blade to carefully cut through the layers once, but that was a mistake.
Yeah. I was having a difficult time unwrapping a few stored cuttings today.
I like them individually labeled and packed in a ziplock, into a bubble mailer. Preferably washed. Especially coming from humid places, I’ve seen my own cuttings and how much rust and fungus growth can be on them. It’s a stark contrast from cleaned and non cleaned.

I spend the time to wash mine with a little soap and diluted bleach with a soft scotchbrite sponge. Individually labeled and mark the top for newbies. I’ll parafilm top and bottoms of expensive cuttings, but the rest go in a ziplock with a dry paper towel and off they go in a bubble mailer.

I meticulously sort and label them, even thru washing…. I understand the frustration of getting a cutting that’s not what it is.
My lord JC, you have a mini fridge for cuttings.

Clip, wrap, ship.

The seller shouldn't be doing anything special to cuttings to prepare them for sale to me, especially unnecessary over the top packaging that forces the cutting/shipping price to be higher because of the extra input cost of said supplies.
Let me be the person who adds the variables that will inevitably kill them.

Also, don't put candy in my cuttings package. 😐.......weirdo...........

I've never gotten any candy in with my cuttings? I want some candy!

I have sent a few cuttings over the years with a soppressata in the box! I'm not kidding! 😬
