Finally got my garlic planted

I planted my German Extra Hardy. Planted 2 rows. Learned something new today while watching this video, a nematode that infects garlic plants. Called Bloated Nematode. Also interesting was Ontario is very infested with them. @TorontoJoe do you have any problems with them? Anyway wanted to share this video with y’all.

I keep saying I will, but I keep putting it off.
Every weekend I have things to do and we are nearing a physical inventory work...which is a very busy time. lol

Oy.

It was really late for me as well. Normally I do it weeks earlier but October was a write off because of work. I ended up putting a few hundred cloves in the ground just last weekend.

I do really enjoy growing garlic. It's not too fussy and matures really early. Plus it's my signature aroma :p

Wow that’s a lot of garlic. Not sure if you looked at the video above but it mentions Ontario has a Garlic bloated nematode problem, have you had any issues with them? If you haven’t watched the video you might want to check it out. Those nematodes are very nasty buggers.

Thanks for the reminder, Teresa. I forgot that I need to get my cloves into the ground. I usually like to do it around Halloween, but it slipped my mind this year. I haven't been using my garlic much yet, just increasing bulb counts, the last few seasons. I'm growing Music, if I'm recalling correctly. Going to try using the scapes in '26.

We're those marigolds the taller or shorter ones? I have a large bag of seeds in the shed and those suckers grow to 3-4' tall.

It’s not too late to get your garlic planted yet. You should be ok. Yes my marigolds were the taller ones. They are a beautiful flower and so many different colors. Here’s how they looked.

Just finished separating and counting. I have 102 cloves to stick in the ground in the near future. 🙂 Are those marigolds a really deep orange color or red? Never have seen one like that, with such deep color

Do any of you have problems with squirrels digging them up after you’ve planted? I have to cover the soil with chicken wire or hardware cloth until they sprout in the spring to keep those little (expletives) from digging up the cloves and making a mess

This is my maiden voyage planting garlic so I’ll have to let you know. This may sound strange but this is the 1st house I’ve ever lived in where I hardly see any squirrels. Now that I just read your post about the squirrels I can see why you planted a “few hundred cloves”. 😓

The marigolds were a mixed color. Deep dark red mixed with gold, orange with red, some were a beautiful solid yellow with multiple layers of petals. These are the ones I planted. Bought them at the tractor supply store.

Nope, there’s plenty of acorns and black walnuts for them I guess.

You know… acorns and black walnuts are the ultimate feed for the most flavourful hogs…. Just saying 😃

I don’t even know if the squirrels are hiding something for later or searching for food.

Oh yeah… the other thing I love about garlic…. The raccoons have zero interest in it. I think only humans may be the only animal that eats them. Nothing touches my onions either

I keep telling myself to get some hogs hahaha. I was listening to a Joel Salatin audiobook and he said black walnuts have bumper crops like every 5 years, this year was crazy for them and even my oak trees rained down acorns this year.

Does anything else grow near the black walnut trees? My neighbour has them and can’t grow any nightshades. I think alliums can handle the juglone though

Looks good, Teresa, hope you have lots of good garlic next year!

I just got a bunch of mine in the ground this last week as well. Still have another box to open and go through. I’m lining all of my bed edges with garlic this year to hopefully help repel critters.

Sounds like quite a few of us are late in planting this season…

Uhhh. “Hemp” doesn’t like juglone, found that out this year….I had a black walnut sapling along on my garden edge and I killed it early in the year, like dug it out and everything, then planted two jalapeno plants that went crazy in that area.

I haven’t experimented with too much though. Maybe I should do that next year just to see what can grow near them. I have tons of seedlings and they are hard to kill, they don’t mind being chopped down.
