Perlite of respectable size

I goofed up and ordered a yard of garden mix instead of my usual potting mix. Both are nearly identical, except one has perlite and the other one doesn't.
Went to the local maryjuwanna grow supply store and found this amazing stuff. $47 (something like $30 USD) for 4cf. Figgin' A!

Surprisingly, I’ve noticed small Mom and Pop operations always have better deals with many bagged products (fertilizer, amendments, grass seed, etc.) when compared to big box stores. I would have thought the opposite to be true.

I have been using #4 perlite lately in my mix . Really like it for drainage and lighting up the pots .

That's good to know. What percentage of perlite do you add to your soil mix? Pure Life Soil potting mix that I've been using quite successfully for many years has it at 10%, but I was thinking maybe increasing it to 20%.

There is a local nursery here that has literally a mountain of nursery pots of all sizes. I discovered it behind the green houses, so most people don't know about it. I buy those pots for $.25 per gallon. It seems like a good deal to me. I don't know why I haven't paid much attention to their fertilizers. I need to go there and see what they got. Maybe they have some deals this time of year.

I cover the insides bottom of the pot with a layer of #4 perlite . To tell you the truth I just eyeball the ratio that I put in my mix . If I like the consistency is good I stop adding.

$.25 per gallon is a darn good price. Are those blow-molded or Injection-molded pots? I am a big fan of injection-molded pots. They are sturdy and look good too, but they are more expensive.

@Figgin' A - I'm going to the wrong maryjuwanna shops. All I can find is the more mediocre Perlite Canada, Holiday stuff at Sheridan Nurseries, but I can never find anything but the medium... which is actually, mostly small....

On occasion I've found a bag of course for about 15x the price.

The blow molded break on me pretty quick. I like the injection molded as well. In the east end, Astral Grow has pretty good quality and prices.... When I get a bit further west, Grow It All is pretty solid.

BTW, Holland Industry has the best price I've found on Alaska Fish fert if you happen to use it.

Check out Grow It All. They have it.

I don't know the difference. There are so many different pots in their mountain. Here are a couple that I bought from them.

An issue I’ve been having with some blow molded pots is the bottom tends to deform and become convex and unstable. Luckily a nearby nursery has plenty of plastic available from 200 cell trays to 25-gallon pots and everything in between for free. My shed is filled with all sorts of plastic containers for future use.

You are quite correct!

I do this too. I have a couple nurseries that provide me with loads of free, returned containers. I don't remember the last time I paid for multi-cell trays... A while back the city was doing some major landscaping and I scored hundreds of these really thick blue one gallon pots. The area behind my shed is stacked tall with them. I may never need to buy a 1 gal again.

The prizes are the bigger, injected blow molded pots... I keep an eye out for those. Anything 5, 7, 10 or 15 gal is a real find if I can get it for free.

Not sure about the top one, but the ones in the bottom pic are def blow-molded. Blow-molded are thin and easy to bend. Injection-molded are thick and hard to bend/deform.

Top one looks injection molded.

Blow molded

Injection Molded

The injection molded are very sturdy and smoother. The blow molded are very flexible and have a rough feel.

The injection molded can also be found square. Blow molded would not hold a square shape even if made that way
