Noire de Barbentane .... Oh Yeah!!!

I thought so as well, but as usual @Figgin' A grows a fig tree that is just off the charts. I had a friend once who was a 6th generation Chinese Farmer's Daughter. She could do things horticulturally that no one else could do. She just had that magic touch. Our Canadian friend just has that magic touch too. Simply Amazing
I am very flattered, thank you. :) But I am just an average backayard gardener. Have you seen the figs that Carlos Rivera grows? Now, that man has a magic touch.

Here is what Harvey has as NDB's description on his cuttings page:

"Noir de Barbentane is a French variety that may be a synonym for Violette de Solliès and Bourjassotte Noire. Pierre Baud describes all three in his book on the same page and indicates they are very similar but that Noir de Barbentane is grown in another area and is earlier. However, the timing of the fruit seems about the same on our farm. They have an oblate shape and have a dark pulp with an intense berry flavor and moderate sweetness".

It looks like Harvey is not 100% certain and Pierre Baud thinks the two are very similar but not the same fig. Which supports my initial obeservation.
Maybe Harvey is growing them all three in the same place and because Baud is talking about figs growing in different locations, there are differences in climate, soil, etc..causing them to grow differently, while actually they are the same if grown in similar locations.

I've only seen a little bit of what Carlos as done... I want to see more. I agree, his results are pretty impressive. I think he's in Brooklyn. He has a ton of trees. I don't how he would start them all early. I'd love to know how he gets his trees so developed by mid August.... Pretty cool.

Also.... I think we have to formally disqualify anyone who's using "magic". It just doesn't seem fair...

Just a thought. Maybe ret

It is in the air.

It's possible. How you grow them can make a big difference. I am looking forward to seeing how my NDB stacks against VDS next year. Regardless, both have been excellent so far, and both handled cooler nights and rainy weather really well. I am very happy with both, though, VDS did wow me taste-wise. But that's only based on one VDS and three NDB figs so far.

I am also looking forward to VdS next year. I have a lot of figs that I'm looking forward to next year. Most of my collection is 1st year trees that got late starts this year. Combined with mistakes I've made being new to fig growing. A lot of figs that will be ripening in October and November. With our climate, I guess they can ripen that late but I have no experience in late season fig growing. I'm learning as I go. Next year is going to be awesome. They will all start early and I will know more about what I am doing. I really hope some day my VdS will grow more like my I258.

Carlos lives in Roselle, NJ. I once checked historical weather for his city; it's pretty warm at his location. He also has a pretty cool microclimate, where his backyard backs onto a brick apartment building. He must have a crazy GDD there seing what kinds of figs he can ripen there even without any headstart.

Yeah but I think he copied my labeling system. 😆

I've got one pot that is a hand me down. It has Mavra Sika with a line through it. Then it has LSU Purple with a line through it. Now it has now it has Izbat An Naj. That one is not labeled so neat. Lol
The biggest reason I didn’t go that route :) I know I constantly up-pot, repot, and change varieties.
