Those $3 figs there are just like their $12 boxes of 10 fancy crackers. Those are not for stuffing yourself. They are there to build fancy charcuterie boards. :) I think I saw a charcuterie board there, or maybe I saw a picture of one while I was there, I can't remember. There were like 2 figs on it.

Don't you worry, I will not be sleeping until that melon fully ripens and I bring it inside. So much at stake, how could I? :ROFLMAO:

You're 100% about all the figs that get sold in overpriced boxes. The box probably tastes better. But they look good on a nice board.

Funny story: A very good friend and neighbour... his family has an Italian restaurant closer to you than to me. Nonno hand makes all the salumi they serve.... (We trade samples of batches) Nonno often jokes... when someone comes into an Italian restaurant and askes for charcuterie, you need to double the price! :LOL:

I really do need to get you some capo sometime... Pairs really well with figs and melon!
 
For those who wanted to see the final pics, here they are. Picked it two days ago. It was sweet, juicy and incredibly aromatic. Rich flavor. The whole fridge smells like melon. It weighed in at 8 lbs and 13.5 ounces. We are still eating it. Will definitely be growing it again next year.

I’m so glad to hear the raccoons didn’t get to it first. The defences held up! Congratulations!

I realize yours is in a container, but how many of those do you think a plant can squeeze out in a season? I imagine you must’ve had to feed that heavily?

No, it was actually 4 kilos and 11 grams.

Yeah, the raccoon problem was a strong concern, but I think I've got that under control.

That's a good question. I could have had 2-3 per plant, but I decided to leave 1 melon per plant to be on the safe side. I'm not sure how well they all would have ripened, but I plan to experiment with that next season. I was also concerned that they wouldn't have enough time to ripen, so I removed the ones that formed later for that reason as well. I want to give them an earlier head start next year, and hopefully that will allow me for 2-3 per plant. I will also not be pairing them with cucumbers, so one melon per container and nothing else.

Fertilizing wasn't crazy, actually. I fertilized them the same way as my other plants, using tomato fertilizer, but also added a few extra fertilizations in between. The only thing I did differently was to water them with very warm water.

LoL! I should never do quick conversions in my head...

I wish I had the raccoons under control... They just keep coming.

Given the price of these things retail, getting 2 or 3 per container would be time very well invested... especially if you can stagger the harvest so they don't all come at once and you can enjoy them. A little more fert doesn't seem like too much..... well that and the custom mini-hammocks and the little melon fortress. :)
 
Those look absolutely FABULOUS! I love how the seeds are all in one place, makes it easier to get them out. Not like regular watermelons where you get seeds in every bite. Hard to enjoy when you have to spit every few seconds. You did a great job. 10 stars for you.🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

Another problem is that we can no longer buy them here as they are too expensive to import from Uzbekistan. Growing them yourself is the only option.
