Plan on growing garlic this season?

Whether it’s your first time like me or not you really should watch this. I plan on planting some this fall I’m glad I saw this video because I was going to plant it in the wrong place and the wrong way.

 
I’m usually a wing it type of guy, but thankfully I looked up how and where to grow horseradish. I opened up and extended my garden for several horseradish plants and other vegetables for Spring planting. Turns out, one plant can quickly take over an entire garden. Will be planting one root in a 15-20 gallon pot instead.

I’m wondering can garlic be planted in grow bags or will they freeze during winter time?

I leave them outside all winter with a thick layer of straw (4”) for mulch. They’re also inside an empty raised bed so the cedar planks help keep them tightly compressed (but there wasn’t any difference in output for the grow bags to the left that didn’t fit in).

Here’s a photo from April showing my set-up.

I put about 3-4 cloves in each bag depending on how big they are.

Did you use potting mix or garden soil? Did you put slow release fertilizer at the time of planting? I understand garlic is a heavy feeder. Especially with the P K and not nitrogen.

Yes, I used old potting soil. I'm a big fan of Keene's Garlic, and I use their fertilizer: https://keeneorganics.com/product/garlicfertilizer/ They have you add it when planted as well as in the spring before the scapes formed. I must admit to missing a few spring applications--just seemed like a lot and my garlic looked good.

I ordered my garlic from Keene. Got an email the other day saying they were going to start shipping soon. I purchased German extra Hardy and Pehoski Purple
 
I'm growing in ground. Mostly Music and Italian Purple. I plant finger deep in raised beds as late as I can after I can no longer grow any fall crops and I can still work the soil. When it's time I add compost and chicken manure and till in before planting .

I use no winter protection. This stuff is fine down to zone 3. I do lay some chicken wire over it flat so the squirrels don't dig them all up.

Pretty good haul this year. Now I'm mostly where I can save the best 20% or so of my crop to plant for the following season.
