Figs are drying on the trees

It's been too hot up here over the past few days. I have to water some trees twice. The figs are ripening perfectly though. California-style. Most are drying on the trees. Picked a bunch of VDB, some RDB and I-258, and 1-2 each of WM#1, HDA and Chicago Hardy. The last two just started to ripen.

Looks great, I noticed a lot drying here too...I have been throwing them in the freezer.
I probably have about 50 or so all over the ground.
This heat sucks lol...trees hate it. :)

@Figgin' A as always the most scrumptious looking fig pics on the platform. You probably been photoshopping 4 years but LOL don't stop they look so good.
Hey, nobody wants to look at crappy pictures 😆

By the way, photoshop can’t fix crappy pictures. Good pics are all about good light. If you have that, no photoshop is needed. 😆

Especially if they are in pots. I suppose in ground trees fare better in this heat. Did you notice any taste difference with figs that ripen in this heat?

Wow you got a delectable selection of perfectly ripe figs .

Absolutely...the figs that ripen in the heat taste bland, slightly sweet but that's about it.
Now...the ones in ground are a whole different story.
No dropping, still flavorful and look great.

I just need to put more in ground. lol

I, too, noticed that in this intense heat figs didn't taste as good as before. Last year when I took several trees in my grow tent where temps got really high, the figs ripened too fast and didn't taste as good either. Good thing we are going back to normal temps on Thursday.

Those look delicious 😋 it's hot here and no rain and the figs are ripening good but I couldn't let my VdB hang as long as I wanted because I saw very tiny ants crawling in and out of the eye of the ripest one so I picked them. I don't know how to get rid of those things.

I was going to get out my canopy tents and put up some shade....still might.
So many have dropped though, I think the rest I'm waiting on can go into the fig pen.

That’s not good. No significant drop here, maybe 1-2 here and there, but the taste definitely took the hit. Next time we have a heat wave I will try slow but nearly constant drip supply of water to my ripening figs. Heat shouldn’t be a problem as figs grow in very hot climates. I think it’s a water supply issue. But who knows, it’s possible that some varieties are good with it and some aren’t. I-258 today was stellar as ever. Like really fantastic. But VDB and RDB lacked flavor. Hm… both originate from a relatively mild climate. Maybe that’s the source of the problem too, these varieties aren’t used to intense heat and/or inconsistent water supply.

Make a slurry with 50/50 borax and sugar, topped with some water until the desired consistency, it will take care of them pretty quickly. I put it in little foil pouches with a small opening near tree trunks. Works like a charm. Monterey bug spray (active ingredient spinosad) works well too. A circle of Diatomaceous earth around the trunk will deter them.

Thanks!

Still dealing with critters (possibly rats) but haven't caught them all this time. Fortunately, I moved the trees inside and has ripened some decent figs. The ones in ground have to fend for themselves. :(
