The $1000 fig tree

I had recognized the user name on Figbid and was hoping he do one of his videos on the subject.
Here you go guys. The buyer answers allot of questions and concerns brought up here on this thread.

I absolutely love this video! He sum's it up so well.... and it's awesome how he drills in over and over how, "you do not need to spend big bucks for great figs". And he's correct. I know, a lot of people really don't like when they see a tree sell for $1000, $2000 or more... I respect that... Personally, I think it's really exciting and I've never seen it any differently than someone who lines up overnight to get the latest Nike shoe or latest iPhone.... I can't pay $2k for a fig tree... but to see someone do it and be so satisfied with their purchase.... I can't help but feel really happy for this guy.

My $0.02

He seems like a really good guy, and very enthusiastic about figs. I was at his youtube live last night for the giveaway he just did to celebrate hitting 500 subscribers, and he gives off the vibe of being generous and kind and passionate about sharing his love of figs with the world. And like you said, @TorontoJoe, he really stressed that you can get a lot of incredible fig trees for very cheap or even for free, and that it's important to educate yourself and be aware of the hype vs the payoff.

I'm going to check out some of his other videos

I missed the live. I need to see who won lol

I agreed but one also must consider how they effect the market for others. People willing to pay high prices for homes and getting in to bidding wars have raised property tax $300 month here. Even the tax assessor know the houses here are not worth what they are being sold for. Now housing prices have doubled and good if you are selling but bad if you are trying to buy.
When Kemp goes to sell cuttings or trees of S33 or other sellers they will take his purchase into consideration to determine the price. One must think how their decisions effect the market. Sale like his would have been better conducted privately. I would have sold my mother tree in a 5 gallon grow pro pot and kept an air layer.
If you look at the other person bidding they have 294 reviews in 8 months from buying. They bought a S33 a few weeks back for 400. That person also bought a private listing I had for someone else with their name on it in two places. I had to refund the money get my fees back and create a new listing.

I know the sentiment is that nobody wants to see anyone taken advantage of... I certainly don't want to see that happen.... But, for me it's difficult not to be excited for Ed or anyone else who is this excited about having something that they feel is special.... When BrianM bought that Angelito a while back for (I think it was) $2600? .... I couldn't help but smile and congratulate the guy.

I admit, I'm not as in-tune with the market as many others here since I don't really sell... just the odd tree locally from my driveway. I just hop on the band-wagon as an observer when something interesting takes place.

It’s a thing I can agree to both sides. If he was going to buy it regardless of the price we should share his excitement while the other half of me agrees with Mattk on it will artificially inflate prices for a bit so it affects others in the long run to a point. Mostly it’s for those that may not know he was willing to spend whatever it took, only to be let down when it only brings minimal returns for the investment a year later. In Ed’s position the price was not a factor, he wanted the fig no matter the cost. In the end it’s hard not to be excited with him when watching the video. Will I pay that much, not a chance, however I can’t say for certainty what side of the fence I stand with this particular sale haha.

Also the fact that he gives copies away when he grows them....

This too, almost like he wants it so bad but also wants to share it with everyone he can. If I could give away figs I would to everyone but also I need to sell a bit to supply the hobby with a budget to fit 😂
I may have spent 100 bucks on a tree to sell rooted cuttings for 30 bucks the next year lol not really money makers but gives me the ability to share at a reasonable price.

If you can make the hobby cost-neutral...or even help offset the cost... that's awesome!

I might be wrong but I also thought Angelito was sold for a fundraiser. By all means if it is going for charity or for a good cause let the price go to the moon.

Figs are one of the few I’ve regularly seen charity sales and I love it. Not many hobbies give the opportunity to raise money for those in need.

Anyone wanting to watch the action here’s the listing 👌

I think I recall some amount of the proceeds were being donated. It was a while back. I assume Brian bought it as an investment to sell through ProFig. Have no idea what he was charging for cuttings or trees.

Danny has rocked raising funds for St. Jude's for years. Such a great cause... I'm glad to see others doing it now.
