Today we compared White Madeira #1 (2nd season airlayer) vs the Prosciutto Unk (2-yr tree) both in 8-gallon pots in our search for the best Adriatic. The top fig is the WM#1 and the lower fig is Prosciutto Unk.

Both were very good figs—nicely ripened with deep red interiors and thick textures. This week has not been good fig ripening weather—high in 70s, low in 60s with lots of clouds/intermittent rain—so it is a good sign that both varieties ripen well in cooler fall weather.

The WM#1 is larger at 55 gm compared to 41 gm for the Prosciutto. The WM #1 had a larger eye that has been more prone to splitting than the Prosciutto. Despite having 2 older WM#1 trees, I’ve eaten fewer WM#1 figs because of splitting than I’ve eaten from a single Prosciutto tree.  I’m on irrigation so my trees have a steady supply of water that should mitigate splitting caused by deluges.

The most important criterion is flavor. Both had good berry flavor and seed crunch. The WM#1 was a sharper, more tart berry than the Prosciutto, which started very sweet and ended tart.

We preferred the Prosciutto Unk, but more taste tests are needed. 😉

@"9ah-figlet"#12 ... Beautiful pictures of both WM #1, and Prosciutto your pictures both look like show stopping ((calendar girls)) so I cannot decide this contest by photos alone. You have reported Interesting results, eventually I will have to run this test myself. Currently I have several WM#1, but so far only the backyard squirrel has conducted any taste tests of it. As far as Prosciutto is concerned I have yet to propagate this variety so the poor squirrel has nothing to compare WM #1 too.

I can't compare them so for that I am thanking you.  I have WM#1 and to me that is amazing.  I did not get any tart from mine.  Mine is super sweet and very berry.

My Proscuitto Unk produced for its first time this year. A bit later then some of the other adriatics, but probably due to its age, more than anything. But I was quite pleased with its Vigor, size of fruit, and production for a first year(2nd leaf). I also noticed it had very good split resistance. After a week of rain it only had a slightly open eye any other time it didn't split at all.

Proscuitto Unk, White Algiers, and Green Ischia tasted the best and performed the best for me this year out of a bunch of Adriatics, but the others weren't far behind in production or tastes, just less split resistance.
