Winterizing Figs in GTA

Here are some pictures of the 'fig hut' I have used in Woodbridge the past couple of years. I copied my father-in-law in Mississauga for most of it! I still have a few more trees with leaves on still that I am yet to add to the fig hut.

Mine is insulated on all sides, and I have a heater attached to a thermostat to keep the hut at -2.0 C for the winter. As well as a fan to keep the air moving that I put on every few days (not running continuous). I put a big white tarp over the entire thing to fight the wind. Eventually I'd like to change the top to a heavy plastic or material that can let sun in to maybe start waking up the trees a little earlier in the spring.

Curious your thoughts and curious how you winterize your figs in cold climates!

Nice box! Is the insulation glued to the boards? How are the panels connected? I assume you break it down so you could store it flat in the spring

Insulation is glued and then some screws for reinforcement haha. Panels were all drilled together so that they can be taken apart and stored flat. Although I must confess I just kept it up this summer and used it to store some gardening tools/accessories. But plan is definitely to store it flat.

Interesting that you have a bottom and raise it off the ground. Most people just sit them right on the earth. This gives you some heat from the ground but your design keeps rodents out. That’s a big problem for a lot of people. Well done!

Can we officially call this method the “Woodbridge Guesthouse”?

It’s really handy. I shove a bunch of potted trees in there with the in ground tree. Every few days I open the zipper and shoot the garden hose in

I had considered something like a pop up over my in grounds, since they are all in a row.
If anything happens to them this winter, as far as freeze damage...I will start protecting them.

haha I love the name. I considered keeping it on the ground for some geothermal heat but because it's on a slab of concrete that extends beyond the woodbridge guesthouse, the concrete gets freezing. So a little base helps insulate it that much more.

That`s awesome, I’ve wanted to try this method but haven’t seen any body in my neck of the woods successful. I just move mine into heated shed for winter. Ever since I saw the full grown tree at Angelo’s greenhouse I’ve been hooked on reproducing it.

Are you referring to Angelo’s greenhouse, the business on highway 7?

Either way I really want to put one in the ground one day! It would be hard to decide what variety if you only have room for one!

Yes, the greenhouse on hwy #7. I’m not totally sure but can’t you graft different varieties onto the same tree? Does anyone know what variety that tree is ?
