Winter squash and melons

It turns out that Koginut is likely the same as Autumn Frost Squash and one site even lists it as if a synonym ... I am eating several that are new to me in the order of ripening stress and i will share reviews

I had Kabocha for the fist time and it is another that I am confused about with Sweet Mama being the one I was recommended to grow....I dont know if the green ones are all Sweet Mama or if it is a better selection of them...

With that said my first one wasnt the best best for a test...but even with that it was very good... the fruit bolted frankly, losing color very quickly... and it lost alot of water weight ... weighing in at under 2 lbs while another fresher one about the same size was over 3 lbs ... so it may have released 1lb or so of water/moisture within the two or three weeks or so that I had it... and so what is already considered to be a 'dry' squash, was exceptionally dry

You can see the color change. The slightly smaller one behind it is really close and the larger one weighs in at just over 5.5 lbs which is larger than the typical ranges given for sweet mama

It was really really dry, extra dry, but very sweet. Not even that easy to use for making pancakes the next day but they came out good. The dry flesh was hard to separate from the skin... and though the skin is edible it doesnt look appealing to eat

That said, I think I could improve it with cooking method...and of course eating it before it has dehydrated more...

Also the seeds are enormous... being a Maxima they are around 5x the size as Pepo seeds... this one had around 40 developed seeds and several ghost seeds... but maybe difficult to roast and allegedly not as good while C. Pepo seeds are abundant and easy to roast... just mix them with olive oil, salt, andnthe cayenne and air fry or roast them for 5 or 6 minutes, 10 if enclosed, and voila... crunchy mineral bombs

These are Carnival. I had one beginning to show ripening stress/spots and so it was time.

The meat is fairly thick... this was one of the larger I have seen in stores.. close to 2.5 lbs not bad

I was really impressed with Carnival ... it was inbetween as far as sweetness goes, and among my favorites for just eating roasted... not in recipes

Delicata Candystick and Honeynut were winning so far...those are really smooth textured while Carnval retains alot of "Squashy" traits, but in a really good way. And it has some other positive traits such as the smaller seed cavity @ thick flesh and it separates easy frim the skin after roasting but maybe due to the way I cooked it

Because it was thicker fleshed, I cooked it differently and ill do the same with Kabocha next time since they are especially thin as far as meat goes but the skin is thick... with Carnival I roasted for 10 minutes with the meat facing up and then flipped them over to roast for 30 more minutes, after brushing with coconut oil. They came out perfect!

Its one of my favorites so far... but with several others to try soon including the Yellow Delicata I found and also the Delicata with the loaf shape... Red Kuri, Black Fustsu, Koginut, and some other Butternuts...

Plus the many that I will attempt to grow this year, and of course the other Kabochas, but in a better eating state before they dehydrate more. I didnt expect that i would be spending close to $100 on squash this year,

and then I got a bunch of seeds too!

Wow man you really went down the rabbit hole on these. lol
I have 10 different packs of seeds that have been delivered.
Hesitated on getting anymore because I won't even be able to plant all of these.
Unless I make mounds all over the property....which isn't out of the question. :)

This is the first seedling at 15 days approx @ the Volunteer from inside of a Delicata...

since i have found a two more volunteers ... and why not a cell tray of those for early squashes ...

Hopefully spring is here early enough for transplanting or I will have to do the rooting through the pot method @ makeshift raised beds

I went crazy on squash and winter root crops for kicks and I stock a bunch of seeds after so many years... if there isnt a good year for it and plus I love radishes ... beets not as much but why not too... in maturity i am going with easier stuff that i love to eat and some beets
