When should I air layer?

I decided to headstart a few of my trees inside the house in front of a south facing window with lots of sun. They are just starting to bud out. I am wanting to air layer them this year to shorten the main whip. Should I start the air layer now or should I wait a few more weeks?

Cheers!

Perfect timing with this question.
I early started my Calderona 2 weeks ago and it's started waking up. I started an airlayer 4 days ago on the top section I plan to cut off. Will update in a month. PXL_20260130_182212339.jpg

You should be able to start one now right? I mean it’ll take longer to root, but still be ok I would think.

Spring is always the best time for AL's in my opinion, unless of course they're in a controlled environment and actively growing.
I always set about a dozen early spring.

How timely, I am waking up a cessac and a WM#1 in basement, I am going to risk it with 6 airlayers on both, temp around 65/68, had no problems having trees in the winter at this temp till spring, my belief is that they will root but at a slower pace, I guess we'll see.
