What the heck is this…

I got a cutting that has something weird on its bark that seems to be getting worse.

Unfortunately, it’s my only bordissot negra cutting. 😔

1) any thoughts of what this could be?
2) what to do about it?
3) could if just be a bordissot negra thing?
4) is it contagious to my other fig plants?

Notes:
- It’s the hard orange plaque that is in the cutting, not the lenticels that I worried about.
- It is unaffected by rubbing alcohol or hydrogen peroxide, so bleach is next.

What happens when you scratch it? Does it flake off and there is bark underneath? Or is like it is the bark itself and it looks damaged underneath?

Looking up different things, I think it might be a sign of canker…

In which case, bleach will not help.

You won’t be able to make it go away from the visual damage that is already there, but you may be able to stop it from spreading.

If the cutting wasn’t too expensive, I may just scrap it and start over with a healthier one.

No, not expensive.

I am more worried about it infecting my other fig pops and plants, so I may chuck it.

I don’t think it will affect your other cuttings because the bacterium exists in the environment already. It requires the right conditions to set in, between structural damage, lack of nutrients, and other things.

It may root just fine and grow out of it. But it also may struggle or just even die wherever it is on the cutting.

So up to you. 🙂

My theory from other plants:

scratch one of the raised spots with a fingernail or toothpick:
  • If it flakes into brittle amber/white crumbs → dried latex
  • If it pops off as a hard shell → scale
  • If nothing really comes off → bark/callus
