Sad day ripping out all the tomato plants. What a tangled mess of vines and half rotted tomatoes that never finished ripening. The only thing left is some basil. all the marigolds are still going strong also my knockout roses. Fig trees still green with hazelnut size figs that will never ripen. They should do good next season.

Ah, tomato.. I finally got a few last week. Too hot to grow tomatoes here.
Have you tried to put a shade cloth over top of them like in the first picture I posted? My tomato plants started wilting and it’s nat as hot here as it is in Texas. Soon as I put the shade cloth over top they grew like weeds. My cloth is 40% shade.

Tried shade cloth and different shade areas. I was told pollination stops above certain temperature (80 something) and we hit that almost daily. I even moved couple plants close to the mint and basil, which attracts lots of bees(I suspect lack of pollinators). That is how I managed to have a handful of grape tomatoes. I usually have too many tomatoes that I didn't know what to do with them. From what I understand, we have to grow tomatoes like lettuce here, either do it early or late in the season when the weather is cooler.

We still have 90s days but the nights have been cooler to upper 60s. That really helps compared to 80s night. And we didn't even have many 100F days this year (only 6 instead of over 20-50 in the last few years)

Millennial Gardener was mentioning planting tomatoes a second time later on, so when the first peter out there's more coming in. I think I will have to do that next year. This is my third October here and it has always been nice, dry, sunny, beautiful days, good harvest weather. I had a Spoon tomato volunteer come up in the middle of Summer this year, it just now giving me those tiny tomatoes and I have another grape type giving me some.IMG_20251015_143151769_HDR.jpgIMG_20251015_143250023.jpg

Jalapenos just don't stop

How do you eat jalapenos? Some of them are mild, too mild and then a few suddenly kicks up a notch.

I put mine on pizza, salad, veggie, usually raw.
Pretty much the same, slice’s on all sorts of stuff. I might try to make the perfect jalapeño popper hahaha

Maybe I can sell Hollerpeño Poppers, Made from local Holler grown jalapeños.

What is the purpose of the white fabric in the first picture? Do the marigolds really discourage insects? I have a problem with flat leaf bugs that drive me crazy with them always being on my tomatoes.

The white fabric is shade cloth. Comes in different strengths. It’s to protect plants or people or animals from the heat of the sun. It works very good. Yes the marigolds do help as an insect repellent. They don’t like the taste or smell. I also think they are beautiful and made the border of the garden bed look pretty.
