Fuyu Persimmon Damage Recovery UpdateSeveral good suggestions, thanks. Especially the idea of selectively choosing buds. The branches broke flush with the trunk, but will try to clean up edges around the break.
Will try to post pics of the big fig.
Well, after the great responses and advice from SpiritfarmVA, KTrain,TorontoJoe and FingerlickinGood, I tried several methods to restore side branching wiped out by a falling tree. I tried either cuts or notches above dormant buds, sealed breaks with wood glue, and bud grafted a new branch using active top growth. Photos below show new bud growth below both cuts and notches. Notably, The bud graft is viable so far and I have hope.
I'm not sure how to manage primary branch and would appreciate any advice. The existing primary emerges above a damaged section of trunk. Should I consider cutting trunk below damaged section and grafting an active branch, or let it try to recover? This prolific 3- year old tree gave us 50+ excellent persimmons last year, so I consider it well worth the effort.
Many thanks again for all of the advice!
