We Underestimate Figs

Seedlings are amazing! Their roots get so long and they seem to survive almost anything.

My trees in pots if they don’t get water on time start looking haggard. My seedlings growing in straight up gravel that only get run off water from my pots are green and have all this vitality in comparison.

My first year trying to breed figs. I did everything right. So I thought. I sprouted them in peat. They grew so well. Then I up potted them. Figured a good organic soil would be perfect. I lost every seedling that year. Sometimes with figs. Less is more. :)

Aw man. I'm sorry to hear that. That hurts.

Well, don't let that stop you from trying

Oh it has not stopped me from trying. It just taught me a lesson. And now I know what not to do.

Please tell me the name of your third dog it's been driving me crazy. There's River, Ranger, and blank? I've been thinking about it for a couple of months. But I was too shy to go back to the old house, and ask you. I can't wait to try some seeds.

@"GoodFriendMike"#9 that's a sad story about your first seed crop. Do you think it was the transplanting that ruffled their feathers, or was it something else. Did you ever figure it out?

That does sound like a couple of things going on all at once. But of course you would be able to diagnose it way better than I ever could. I have been using extremely well draining potting mix that I amend every year. Basically it's a 8-year-old recycled potting mix that started out to be a little topsoil plus the old Happy Frog, which is not like the current formula. Also Empire which at that time also carried a little topsoil, Ocean Forest, Horticultural pumice, Pro mix with its high peat moss content, and perlite number four. It's pretty old. Some of it's 10 years old, but it keeps on working. One of these days I'm going to have to beg you for some seeds to caretak for one of your breeding projects. But as we all know I'm such a newbie that the ink is still drying on my figfanatic membership card.

When I was replacing deck boards and installing hardware cloth around the deck last month, I found fig roots from an inground tree inside sections of old wisteria roots where the inside rotted away. Should’ve taken a picture.
