Valencia Pride mango

Anyone ever had a Valencia Pride mango before?

My aunt shipped it to me from a farmer’s market from the Santa Monica pier. She has to special order the mango ahead of time, and the grower limits the number she can get because he doesn’t have a lot of trees of this variety.

The variety grows in the California desert, and they’re somewhat like Mexican honey mangoes but not hot water treated. It is larger than most mangos, has a unique triangular fold (what we might call a fingernail in figs), a very sweet flavor with minimal pine-y aftertaste, and a smooth texture (no strings). I get a little pineapple aftertaste.

Definitely the best mango I’ve ever had!

Very nice Mangoes. Since our Mangoes will not be producing for several years, we routinely check for fiberless varieties on sale at Costco and local markets. We avoid Tommy Atkins (fiberous) , but occassionally find Keit, Kent and/or Valencia

Oh you're so lucky to get these. I've never seen them in the store where I live. I read that they originated in Florida.

For kicks, I'm thinking about seeing if I can germinate the seed (even though it will take forever to fruit if its even possible to do so in pot).

Not top tier but mid. Good producer for Cali but much better tasting mangoes in FL.

If you do germinate it, just remember that they aren't true to seed.

That looks soooo delicious and juicy. In picture 1 I thought the seed inside was germinating.

Yes, Florida is ahead of Cali in Mangoes, home growers in Cali are still trying to work through best rootstock. I have the added problem that temperature rarely reaches 80 degrees in my microclimate. To start, I am growing Chocanon, Kent, and Lemon Meringue (I couldn't resist the name). Sweet Tart appears to be gaining traction amongst home growers.

@9ah-figlet @Figgerlickinggood now that I've seen Nina's amazing Garden I have to confess that both your backyards look as if they could use a double walled Greenhouse for the occasional potted mango tree, and of course for quick starts. You could probably use rolling cattle guards to shuffle inside and outside your G house.

If you look at @SubmarinePete G house you will see he has the rolling benches. Two people working in tandem could fill or empty his Greenhouse with that rolling bench design very very fast. Cattle guards well lubricated could maybe be substituted.

I would love to have a greenhouse, but my HOA doesn’t allow them.

I’ll settle for seeing if they germinate. If they do, I can bring them inside for the winter under grow lights like my citrus and guava. It’s all an adventure. 😁
