Update on Basic protection against bitter cold winter temperatures.

A quick update to share additional facts and lessons learned from using dead leaves and tarps in Zone 6a MA, with fellow members that may be growing figs in similar conditions.

Temperatures dropped to 5 F° and spent the last ten hours in the single digit zone. This basic protection approach has so far proved successful and temperature inside held the 32 F° line. Again, the Govee thermostat is inside a 22 ft. X 6 ft. enclosure that is almost filled with dead leaves and covered by several layers of tarp. About 5” of snow helped seal it tight, trapping passive ground heat and limiting the drop in temperature inside to 2 degrees over a 24 hour period when outdoor temperatures dropped 20 degrees.
The real beauty about it is the total absence of all risks associated with active heat: burns, fire, loss of power, etc… This setup is perfect for the environment and conditions I am growing figs in.
Good luck to all and hopefully spring will bring about some positive results.

The temperatures only got down to 9F this morning and should be about the same tomorrow morning. I’m gonna open one of my wrappings this weekend when temperatures are above freezing to check for any moisture buildup or presence of mold.

That is an important step that some neglect to do. Mold can cause a lot of damage if not prevented or dealt with in a timely manner. Starting February, on warmer than usual days, I unwrap the top of the enclosure to let out hot air and ventilate the space to reduce humidity and risk of mold.

We had several inches of snow in the Houston area yesterday. I have most of my figs in pots so I just brought them indoors. I’m glad your method is working!

Too cold for snow here right now. Currently we don't have temps rising anywhere near above freezing anywhere in the forecast. I don't think that happened once last year for a 2 week stretch

That’s a work of art Mj I give you credit for giving us an idea on how to pretect our trees with minimal cost. For us in northern zones are dealing with extreme cold we’re talking -15 to -20 for 2 weeks so far. My thermometer is showing constant heating every half hour between 3-10 c degrees in the box and outside temps are -15. Only problem I worry for is power outage. So your idea is worry free. One month and a half season begins. Let’s hang in there folks.

3F outside and 28F inside the garage this morning. This was the first morning garage temperatures dropped below freezing. I’m finally ready for some warmer temperatures.

I might need you to send me one of those moose skin coats y'all wear out there, it's down right frigid here. 😂

That’s awesome. Is that maybe even a bit on the warm side? Amazing how well your box retains the heat

Huh, it's 73F outside right now and I'm in a t-shirt. Not all of my trees are completely dormant yet as this has been an abnormally warm and dry winter (driest since 1850) for San Diego.

Do not forget to account for rodents - you are building them a nice habitat too.

It’s because my box is tightly closed with insulation foam if I made the box really big it would have a hard time heating. As you see in the photo everything is snugged tight.
