Unique trait or Hype?

It's a bit ridiculous to sell a 'potential' unknown. If he grew it for a few years, took cuttings each year and they continued to exhibit that characteristic, maybe that would be something worth selling. At least Ondata is a very good fig.

The auction

It's just 2 people trying to outbid each other. In those scenarios, the price can go VERY high

He sold one last week too that fetched $320. I’m scratching my head as to what’s the big dealio.

I mean there are rare instances where some nodes on figs that have actually pushed out 3 figs at one node but I don't see it as some sort of Infinity Node that will just keep on pushing figs from it throughout the season - it was just late.

That's funny you mention that. Check out my post from yesterday.

The seller seems to know how to grow figs and has a productive tree. Showing that will sell. Can't blame him or her for that.
Maybe they will get some dirt and fertilizer money back on these sales.

HA - perfect example!

Edit - WOAH did I just witness 4 figs from one node that's at the top of the soil line!?
I'm pretty sure you did. I'll go get a close up of the 4 figs tomorrow. I forgot to do it today.
Not to hijack the thread, but I think the 3 node fig is the same variety that produced this mutant fig, in this thread.

NOOOOOO!!!!

Should of let it grow - sometimes small plants will just stagnate for weeks almost months (my Cosme Manyo potted cutting for example).

Would of been awesome to grow out this monstrosity!

Cuttings from this one would sell for a good price if worded right.

I'm not even going to cut the tip off this tree this year. I think the key to getting this one to produce like this again is to not change the hormone profile dramatically. Next year I will give it the same growing conditions / timing I did this year. If it does the same next year, I'll take 1 or 2 cuttings, then treat those the same way as the mother tree. If the cuttings are successful and exhibit the same characteristics as the mother I will consider trading / selling. Seems like 2-4 year process before even 1 or 2 cuttings are distributed. It would be worth the wait if it's a tasty fig and produces 2-4 figs per node.

I'm hesitant to take a tip and graft because that might disturb the hormone profile. Though the thought had crossed my mind to graft onto Cherry Cordial and see what the results are.

I would not cut it either. Just using the growth as an example.

I know :( I feel a bit silly now but at the time I was thinking what am I going to do with a mutant that doesn't grow. How could it get energy with no leaves? And I had 2 trees like that! I also have another confirmed mutant growing in my collection but it's not able to be found right now. It had 1 of those inverted flowers, but it grew out 3 healthy shoots below it. I'm going to see if I can track it down this autumn when I re organize.

The mutants 100% came from @SpiritFarmVa They were given to me as rootstock. It's all super vigor no fmv trees, so I was shocked when I saw those weird flowers. Maybe we can replicate it this year. Though I would shocked if it happened again.

Don't feel bad - it'sthe inner fig mad scientist in me that screamed in silence (lol).

I wonder if they have their plants near powerlines like I have... I've had a few examples of Swamp Things happen to my figs lol.

I found pictures of 1 of the mutants I kept. It had healthy shoots growing below the single inverted flower so I kept it. I will find it this autumn I think. I remember thinking to let this one grow because I could take air layers from the healthy shoots ( to use as rootstock)

I stored the mutants in a protected greenhouse. Buried power line 40-80ft away.

Leaves look the same as the 2-4 figs per node tree. I'm about 100% convinced they are the same variety

The thing to consider here is, even if this tree did have a special trait where it put out a new fig where the first fig was ripening...the chances that it will ripen in time for you to eat it the same season are very slim.
So is it then a special trait?
No more special than having 2 or 3 figs at one node that you will likely get to eat same season.

Oy...

I think you’ve expressed why I’m having problems wrapping my head around this. Figs that throw consistent doubles, what @rnexus posted, or are measurably more productive I understand and even desire…I have a Smith Sport that is purportedly proven superior to all others and is traceable back to Bencnel Farms. I paid a premium for it but hope to get returns once it’s matured. In this instance the premium wasn’t that much and I had a high degree of trust of what the seller was telling me.

It’s the same in other collectors hobbies. I’m also into numismatics and am always chasing ‘top pops’ or the next best thing. But as I gain more experience within the field…be it tropical fruit trees, coins, or figs, it gets easier to be dismissive about the ‘cherry bombs’ but there’s some with greater validity such as this…yes the guy hasn’t trialed it and it’s not proven consistent or desirable but it’s equatable to buying a newly found fig that’s not proven common. In these instances though, the premium is more than the trust being applied to what the seller is saying.

Upon my mother’s death, we found a glass measuring cup that was so old the markings had wore off. My mother had taken a black permanent marker and etched in where the lines should have been. I went to Walmart and bought a new one with fancy shape and markings on the bottom. I broke it and threw it away within the month. I now have a glass one with black magic marker lines.

Truth.
