trunk coating for rabbit protection

I have left a variety of container trees outside this winter in zone 6a Central IL. the trees all appear to be doing well but recently the rabbits have been chewing on them. What can I put on the trunks to encourage the rabbits to leave them alone?
 
Your best option is hardware cloth. I attempted using plastic fencing over the Winter on my blackberries and the rabbits either chewed through the fencing or toppled it over. Thankfully, the rabbits were kind enough to not girdle 100%, just 90% in some cases so I should still get berries this summer.
