Too close for comfort

Today I noticed from little distance what looked like a beautiful ripe OC Celeste fig so in my excitement I quickly went up to the tree and reached my hand out to pluck it off.  When it reached about an inch away I suddenly noticed 4 yellow jacket hornets eating away at the fig.  I just shuttered when I thought how that was going to end.  I’m sure glad I saw that.  They were hard to see with the fig leaves around the fig. :(

Glad you were safe, yellow jacket stings are no joke. Most of my fig trees are whips this year, so pretty clear line of sight. But next year, I’ll remember this post and take a good look before reaching in.

@"Figgerlickinggood"#7. Teresa please be careful out there. Especially as you move into your new house, different stinging pests/nests are going to be new conditions you have to be very watchful for. I'm glad that this potentially dangerous situation worked out all right for you.

Yellow Jackets are no joke.

I was clearing an easement with a machete in Virginia Beach when the nest I disturbed attacked me...had to run into the shower...

Wow! Definitely a close call. I'm glad they didn't get you. I've disturbed a couple of nests...the first one I didn't even know I had disturbed it until they started to sting me! Just like Lewi, I had to run for the house...they were relentless. I'm glad you saw them!

I still have a scar on my thumb 30 years later.

They're the worst. Way back I learned the hard way that they don't lose their stingers like bees and can sting multiple times. One got into my car and just tore into my leg while I was driving.
