Today's pick

How do you like Violeta compared to other Black Madeira types?
I tasted BMKK side by side with Violeta. I couldn't tell the difference here in TX. The weather here is typically pretty hot when they are ripening so the nuances typically are wiped out. You need to ripen them in cooler weather or environment(like grow tent or fig shuffle). Then, maybe you would notice the difference.

I didn't see the Violeta at all because I moved it to another spot a few weeks ago. This one is shrunk down so much that I thought it was another variety nearby.

Yep, the colors of the pastiliere looks deep violet, almost black to the edge. The color from the skin definitely bleeds into the figs.

These pastiliere are at different level of ripeness. Guess which ones I like best?

It is quite unique as it doesn't like peanuts but love figs. It picked all the ripe figs including the ones I missed. And it only ate the ripe parts.

Not sure if it is into social media. But I think someone fed it before so it is not afraid of people except in a cage. I had to cover the cage to calm it down. It shot out like a star when I released it around lunch time.

Y'all, don't laugh. My haul of the day is 1 (one) fig - the first fig of the year, and it's...Chicago Hardy!.

I was in the apartment last winter and had nowhere to store the pot for proper dormancy. This tree woke up in February, then grew so big, so I took it outside at the beginning of May (but the month ended up pretty cold in PA). The poor tree seemed to have gone into shock...it has not produced a single leaf (!) since that time. But it has kept pushing out figs at every nod, and now they are beginning to swell.

It's a humbling experience to see the tree responding with such creativity and generosity to suffering.

Does your apartment have a balcony or storage space or garage?

It is amazing the tree held on to its leaves and fruit early. Often, they would drop their leaves and figlets and start new ones later.

Yes, @grasshopper, it has a balcony. Since I'm new to PA, I had hard time gauging whether it would be protected enough there. I was afraid it would still freeze there, since it's in the pot, so when first frosts started, I brought it in.

I too was amazed that it held both the leaves and the fruit. I dropped 7 figlets, but held on to the rest - though many of the original figlets, especially close to the terminal buds, show scarring from the cold.

But the good thing is we are looking for a house, and I'm looking at every yard with the idea of planting fig trees 😁
