State of the Fig union at my yard.

Photos were taken this morning showing a couple of my in ground trees and a few of the potted ones. Unless noted otherwise, these trees are first leaf, as they were rooted this past winter.
It seems that many will have to be brought inside my grow room to extend the season and allow some of the figs to ripen (hundreds will never make it).
Next year, head start will begin in the first half of March, so figs would ripen during the hot summer season. I would rather not have to extend the growing season ever again).

They all look great for mostly first year trees.

What are your plans to headstart? Greenhouse or garage or something different. I agree that extending the season can be a major hassle.

I use one of three car slots as a grow room. While the garage is not heated, it is right under the family room and my man cave space (a moderately heated basement) is behind it.
I build a 10’ by 12’ plywood box, use foam insulation, and wrap the entire space (top and walls) with heavy duty tarp. (Planters sit on top of decking materials so they are a few inches above grade)
Starting second week of March, I switch on the lights: 10 LED / T8 / 12,000 luminous, and use a dehumidifier. They are enough to keep the temperature at or above 68 degrees.
There will be some undesirable shuffling involved comes spring time to allow the new growth to harden…

For in ground trees, I will wrap them with a heat cable. I have already bought several 7-watt cables but I am concerned they could cause burn damage to the trees? @"TorontoJoe"#1
Hopefully Joe can weigh in. Should I get the 5 watts cable instead?
I intent to wrap the trees with burlap so the cables then add the heat cables on top…

Very good plan just remember transitioning them into full sun for the potted trees will be challenging but doable.

Can you share your location?

Most of them have grown into good size trees.
Here is the trunk of a second leaf Atreano (close up).
Also, some have grown into 8’ tall single trunk trees, and I can use some guidance on how to prune them… For instance, this I-258… not sure if I should cut it all the way down to about 24” to 30” above soil line.
I saw those pruning charts, but I can still use some expert advice.

Same with this YLN-
Single trunk that grew way too high…

When she goes dormant you can cut her down but it will delay next season. Sometimes we have to cut them back drastically.

@"MFJFIGS"#76 . Wow what a beautiful home Orchard. Simply loaded with photogenic show stopping figs. Very nice thickness to the Trunks, and the branches. Are the Fig fruits in the organza bags really Paratijal Rimada? They're so big they could be yellow long neck. All the best to you as you near the very end of your summer season.

@"MFJFIGS"#76. I sure hope you were the one eating those beautiful yellow long necks. I really like all these threaded posts you're putting out. They are all high quality and very enjoyable to read. As you may have noticed I am by my nature a reply poster. LOL I need your original threaded posts to do my thing.
