Squash Vine Bore

i grow mine under a net and hand pollinate. i'm also growing snake gourd which should be immune.

Another great alternative is bush honeynut butternut squash and eat them young.

problem with these other vining summer squash is theyre huge vines

C moschata and C mixta both have solid stems which is why the borers have trouble with them. I was plagued by vine borers and squash beetles. I tried tromboncino and didn’t really care for it. Too stringy. I preferred the young mixtas.

Also growing vertically helps. Remove all leaves below harvested squash. It keeps the plants tidier and makes finding the grass easier. Aluminum foil around the stems is also supposed to help.

If you wait a few years to break the cycle, generally, you can grow again. BT allegedly works but I didn’t have luck with it.

Should have tried the South Anna Butternut squash I was handing out...never had an issue with borers.
Of course that's winter squash vs summer. lol
