I'm posting this for early fig pics For showing off your new, baby, just waking , teeny figlet pics ... Before the glistening ripe fig pics. Here are just three (how do I choose?!?!?) pics from my early morning walk through. These are all in their second year.
1- I258 that I planted in ground standing up tall with lots of new leaves
2- sweet joy from bass exploding with big leaves
3- exquisito with baby figlets (size of a fingernail) on new growth. It isn't going to give me brebas this year. It's a quite small tree

Looking good! I use to live in between San Antonio and Austin Tx, small town San Marcos. I imagine that area has to be really good for figs.

Oh I go to San Marcos a couple time a year! And yes it's lovely weather for figs although I've had some sun damage when I thought one was ready for full sun and wasn't. It seems like the ones that woke up outside have no issues even with their tiny little leaves but the ones I had inside which were fine last year need a little more babying. I'm still learning but they are growing like weeds!

As long as the sun isn’t too strong(burning new wood etc) pretty much anything that pops in the sunshine will be fine. You may lose a couple new leaves when they are teeny tiny, but other than that they’ll be fine all season.

Your I-258 is growing like mine. Straight up towards the sky and not much branching. I guess that's how they grow but I think they get very tall. I have a little Exquisito too. I have a small Siblawi, so remind me next winter and I will give you cuttings if it grows big enough.

Looking good, bet!

I topped out that i258 so it has I think 3 tiny little two inch branches up at the top but it seems like they are growing so slow despite fertilizer and water. It's probably just because I look at them every day. You know watched pot and all.

I did that to my Violeta and CdD Roja. They look exactly like your I-258. I haven't done it to my I-258 so I think it's going to get super tall this year without much branching. Part of me wants to pinch it, or chop the top but I'm probably going to wait until it goes dormant.

I haven't been around much lately... but I've been working on my backyard and bought a big chicken coop to use as a crop cage to keep the squirrels and birds away from my potted figs. It came with chicken wire but I have hardware cloth I'm going to cover it with. Also should take care of protection from hail from our violent thunderstorms too. I think it will be one of my better ideas. Should be done by next weekend. Yesterday I did my usual Saturday morning walk through.... Here's my campaniere yesterday morning. It's only about 30 inches tall from the soil line but it's got at least 25 figlets. I've never had one so I hope they are good

You can take out that hardwire in the fall or early spring, replace it with greenhouse plastic and you’ll have a nice little greenhouse to extend your season or start it early 😉 a bit of work rotating the two materials but something I would do haha

Actually I had thought about that and I am going to try putting the hardware cloth on the inside of the structure so it won't snag anything and that way I wouldn't have to remove the hardware cloth and when needed I could just cover with the green house plastic. As much as I love my pop up greenhouse it gets very windy here and I thought I had it well tethered but it jumped a six foot fence into my neighbors yard. I was lucky. I didn't get near their house but it could have busted out windows. So I'm thinking if I do this and leave the hardware cloth on it will be heavy and go nowhere and I can throw a shade cloth over it as needed too. And I won't have to lug pots in and out. It's still an experiment... We will see.

An even better idea 👍 yeah sounds like it can be a multifunctional thing for you, I would definitely play around with shade cloth in the scorching summer and greenhouse plastic in the fall / early spring :)

Great minds think alike! I was looking at a huge used dog run to use as a crop cage, too, although that’s rather putting the cart before the horse in my case…😆🫢🤣

This is what I got. It's almost 10 feet by 6.5
Screenshot_20260505-100549.png I got it from Amazon. Easy to build but you have to follow directions exactly. All the parts had labels. Here's the frame the hard part will be the hardware cloth because it's hard to straighten and I want to put it on the inside
