Source for Washed Coco Coir?

I’ll take the bait - why is ProMix not recommended for use? I’ve only used it one season when purchased on clearance without issue rooting cuttings, seed starting and uppotting. It’s only peat moss, coir and perlite of varying percentages.

@bushdoctor82 and @GoodFriendMike. I think one of the MYCO fungi included in pro-mix is counter indicated to promote root growth, it seems to actually do the opposite. Every time I see those little yellow mushrooms forming in my Fig Pop bags I know I'm in for it. Plus the #1 perlite included in pro-mix actually will retain water rather than improve drainage or aeration. It'll hold water almost like pond liner lol always recommend #3 perlite. And my last, and probably most important observation is Pro mix just doesn't seem to be a very good rooting mixture. I've just learned to stay clear of it. I think almost any mineral soil would be better medium to mix with coco, and #3 perlite. I certainly don't start as many cuttings has Mike. But I did 190 this year, and 125 the year before so I am noticing some trends.

I'd love to play with coir a bit more but it's so expensive here..... if you can find it. I think the viability is in large part determined by availability at your location. I imagine coir is more easy to find in the south.

Up here it's peat... lot's and lot's of peat. I don't mind peat at all. Add the right amount of perlite and wetting agent. It's been very good to me.

Speaking of peat, or whatever you use. This is the time of year to go by every store you can to look for end of season clearance on mix. I've picked up 4 cf bales of Sunshine #4 or Promix HP for $18 - $20. If you can find damaged packaging that's a good place to start. Often there will be a pallet with a couple of taped up bales left that they want to dump cheap. Don't be afraid to ask. Worst they can say is "no". But sometimes it's a "yes"

So I just ordered some coco coir for myself. Royal Gold is considered a good brand. On greenhousemegastore.com you can get up to 4 bags with their flat rate shipping of $16.99, possibly, that’s the rate for me, haha. I don’t know what it is for a different state. But this is much, much cheaper than Amazon. They do have free shipping specials from time to time, probably tomorrow since I just placed my order now. 😆

(It’s so funny, Greenhouse Megastore has it listed as being made in Humboldt, Germany but it’s actually Humboldt County California, weed capital of the USA. 😜)

I need a local nursery that sells supplies. Nothing close by so I buy online and always pay more for a really good mix. I only use it for cuttings though and mix my potting soil myself. Lots of peat for me as well.

Same here. There are a few local greenhouses, but they sell plants, close after the growing season, and don't offer supplies.

Gary Matsuoka's mix......a game changer!......35% Peat Moss, 30% Pumice, 20% Pearlite, 10% Washed Sand, 5% Biochar.
