I’ve been trying multiple methods over the past few seasons to manage (not rid) my garden areas of root knot nematodes and other soil borne pests. @Inflorescence brought to my attention a process called Anaerobic Soil Disinfestation (ASD). Links below if interested in reading more.
Before attempting this process on the entire vegetable garden, I am trialing it on ~30 gallons of potting mix that I grew peppers and tomatoes in last Summer. Two of the containers were located next to my RDB (still covered in background of picture 1) and you can see RKN galls on the roots which were also growing into the pots. My simplistic (possibly incorrect) approach to ASD was to mix shredded leaves and compost into the potting mix as the carbon source and add Jadam Liquid Fertilizer to fully saturate the mix. I filled two trash bags with the pungent concoction and they will fester anaerobically until May when I’ll be ready to plant tomatoes and peppers.
I’ll be planting mustard in my main two vegetable, herb and soon to be fig tree beds this coming weekend, then marigolds, ricinus and wine caps in mid May. Even if all these methods prove successful, if I can’t deter the moles/voles tunneling (picture 1) and other varmints, it’ll all be for naught. What a pain these pests can be.
