Smith & Cessac

I was watching a video of a comparison between these two, in the video they took some leaves off of each tree.
To be honest I had never noticed these leaf shapes from either tree and wondered what was up...they have the correct trees?!

So...I went out to look at mine, and among the classic 5 long finger leaves, there was a couple with those shapes.
But it seemed like all the ones on the video were these "odd to me" shapes and no classic ones.

Here are 3 from my Cessac and 3 from one of my Smith trees.

First 3 Smith

Now 3 Cessac

In ground smith with no 5 finger leaf. I left this uncovered in south NJ with partially lignified growth. My backyard has a decent micro climate . Brutal winter. Survived pretty decent. After 6 years I will finally know if I like smith or not. Don’t care for it in a pot for some reason.

Smith has a bit of a reputation for not being hardy. At least for you, that doesn't appear to be the case.

If I like it in ground and performs well enough to keep, we shall see if this is the case. I put a second one in ground close to the house early spring of this year, this one is a 5 year old that was always in a pot. I held onto it every year hoping the following year I would like it enough to keep around.
