Seed swapping...

I've been very inspired by all the talk about seeds and food crop recently. It's something very dear to me. I'd love to figure out a way to create a thread dedicated to members just swapping seeds. Nothing more than "need it" and "got it" with little more than a postage stamp to share...

I'm not sure yet how to make something like this organized and efficient... but it's on my radar. I'm totally open to suggestions. There are some limitations but I think it's a great idea for people who just want to share cultivars that they love

More to come on this... :)

Seeds are much more easily shared than plants or even cuttings. I’m glad to see there’s an interest. Let me think on how to make this organized. I’m just really excited about some of what this group is probably growing :)

I'm curious, what do you use amaranth for?
The leaves are edible and a staple delicious leafy green in Greek cousine. Young tender leaves can be eaten raw like spinach, or in salads. Leaves are usually cleaned , stripped of the fibrous stems and boiled. Olive oil, lemon or vinegar, salt and pepper. Full of nutrients and vitamins. Seeds are edible too, but need to be cooked. They can grow tall (8') and one flower will produce hundreds of tiny seeds.

Wow, I had no idea!
Are all the varieties of amaranth edible? Or just some of them are the man ones that people eat?

Note that Amaranth will take over your garden if you don't control those seeds! We planted some a LONG time ago and fought it for years. But it is a great ancient grain if you manage the seeds well.

Im all for it but also i think its really helpful to give a history with some types of seeds... ive been realizing how much change has happened in the seed trade due to the internet... there have been mass suppliers for a long time but now seeds can go everywhere from anywhere and across climates ... across oceans even

It went from local yellow crooked neck or mail order to now hundreds of squashes and as many seed suppliers..But yes sometimes its cool to just be able to have the genetics and to see what happens ...

I recently bought a domain @ HandPollinated.com. i think would be cool to use for those farms that breed their own crosses and or who subscribe to the open seed initiative or free sharing no restrictions ... Hopefully i can work on that this year
