Wow! I never thought I would be getting figs to ripen still on November 8th! I may still even get one of two more (from this tree and another one) before the true fall weather hits. This Bordisott Negra Rimada (BNR) fig is very late, living up to its reputation. When I checked it on my way to work this morning, it just fell off the tree when I lightly touched it…so it was as ripe as it was going to get. I really love the color and striping. The figs are very striking. And the inside looks great also. The flavor was pretty good, but not as sweet as I had hoped. It does not surprise me though. The tree only has maybe half a dozen leaves left on it, as it is already on the path to going dormant. And with much shorter days, I just don’t think any of figs are going to be able to sweeten up like they do in the heat and longer days of summer.
It has definitely been a strange and unseasonably mild fall so far. We have had two very light frosts that were very short duration. Usually by this time of year we have had some hard freezes by now. Considering we have had very harsh and cold winters in the past two years, this has been very nice so far. Hopefully we won’t have any polar vortex events this year and my one in ground tree can catch a break and not die back to the ground again.
