Ripe BNR in November!

Wow!  I never thought I would be getting figs to ripen still on November 8th!  I may still even get one of two more (from this tree and another one) before the true fall weather hits.  This Bordisott Negra Rimada (BNR) fig is very late, living up to its reputation.  When I checked it on my way to work this morning, it just fell off the tree when I lightly touched it…so it was as ripe as it was going to get.  I really love the color and striping.  The figs are very striking.  And the inside looks great also.  The flavor was pretty good, but not as sweet as I had hoped.  It does not surprise me though.  The tree only has maybe half a dozen leaves left on it, as it is already on the path to going dormant.  And with much shorter days, I just don’t think any of figs are going to be able to sweeten up like they do in the heat and longer days of summer.

It has definitely been a strange and unseasonably mild fall so far.  We have had two very light frosts that were very short duration.  Usually by this time of year we have had some hard freezes by now.  Considering we have had very harsh and cold winters in the past two years, this has been very nice so far.  Hopefully we won’t have any polar vortex events this year and my one in ground tree can catch a break and not die back to the ground again.

Well dang Randy, mighty fine looking BNR!

I thought I was going to get one, but it turned out a dud. lol

Yeah, I was surprised to get any this year, since it is a first year tree.  I'll have to see how this one does in the next year or two.  It is definitely a beautiful fig, but not sure if it will make the cut or not.

Nice one man. I love the striped figs. But so far they don't do good here.

Thanks.  I have a couple of striped varieties now.  Not sure yet if BNR will make it here or not.  It is just its first year, so I will give it a couple of years to provide itself, so we will see.  I have a feeling that it may be too late of a variety here (as I've seen comments about), but I still want to give it a chance to prove itself.

Looks good! BNR is one of my favorites when I can get it to ripen here.
Thanks.  I have a feeling that is going to be a problem for me also.  The tree popped figlets fairly early, but they take forever to ripen.

Looks beautiful. I've never had much luck with the striped figs either.
Thanks.  Yeah, I'm not too sure if this one will be early enough for me here.  But I have Rigato del Salento, which I think might end up being a winner for a striped fig.  It is still very young, but ripened a couple this year that were outstanding!

That beautiful Bordisott Negra Rimada. Sure looks like a showstopper calendar girl fig to me. I loved looking at it. Not only was it beautiful, but it looked to be a good-sized fig as well. It looks like you put it on a scale but I didn't seem to find the weight when I was reading your post. Randy would you care to share how big was that fruit??

Thanks! No, didn’t get a chance to weigh it. But it was pretty good size. I’m guessing 50 to 60 grams maybe? They definitely are pretty!

I’m guessing 50 to 60 grams? I was checking it on my way out the door on my way to work and it just fell off into my hand. So I brought it to work with me. No scale. But I had one about 5 weeks ago that was 58 grams and this one seemed very similar. I would imagine you might have more luck with this one than me, since it seems to be a late season variety.
