Pruning Opinion-Stallion & Borda Barraquer

Hello all,

Penny for your thoughts? What do you suggest, and do you agree with my thoughts on pruning these two trees?

1st up, Stallion. I'm thinking I need to remove the branch with the blue line next to it to give it more of a tree form, and then I can root more cuttings (just what I need). I think this one is pretty straightforward.

#2, Borda Barraquer. I am thinking I need to prune the branch I circled in blue to open up more of the center or do more and take it off where I've highlighted in yellow?

Let me know what you think and please ignore the messy driveway. ;) It is cleaner now that it has warmed up, and all of my trees are back outside.

Stallion I would remove the branch as you said.
Borda I would just remove the one circled in blue.
I like to have a branch in the center. Maybe next year prune the branch to the left some and have the center as a main.
Just a thought. I like the tree look myself.

Agree with both blue options.

Only other comment would be to head the remaining trunk on Stallion to get branching started a bit lower, although it’s hard to determine the actual height of it.

Stallion I agree, BB I would leave a leader in the middle, which ever you choose you can train it to be straighter.

Both nice trees,,, How do you like Stallion?

I've not had any fruit from it yet. It only had a couple figs this past year, and the birds enjoyed them.

same here, and I'll keep this in mind for next year's pruning.

I wish I had a Borda Barraquer for some reason that variety has been the hardest to locate for me this year. Yours looks beautiful so many ways you could prune it but I do agree with ktrains suggestion above. BTW where did you get yours from? Did you get it from Harvey? I can see from your message posting time that I was driving to San Diego for a crfg event when you posted it. LOL the squirrel who owns my backyard has quite an appetite.

I did get a cutting from Harvey about 3 years ago from the 2022 cuttings sale. My tree grew really strong for the 1st two years and really shot up, and it slowed a little this past year. It was very hot and dry in 2024 for GA, and that probably contributed to the slower growth. I've pruned my tree, and I was able to make two cuttings from the one branch. I have both cuttings rooting, and if they take, I'm happy to send you a one if you do not mind covering shipping. Let me know if you are interested.

That sounds wonderful @Drew351 yes I will take responsibility for paying for that. I cannot yet tell you the master list of our larger cutting giveaway. I can only tell you that there will be one. It will involve at least 300 cuttings. How many each member can have will be limited. A decision yet to be made.

I would agree on the first…. But for the BB…. It’s a bit difficult to tell the overall size…. But do you think you could train out that circled brach for a 4 limb open vase? That might give you more fruiting wood….

Food for thought

Thanks for the advice and I'll keep this in mind. I did trim the tree already, and I'll see how it grows this year. I'll have plenty to trim this season, and I need to do more shaping of my trees.

You're very welcome and I'll keep an eye out for the cutting give away. I told myself I was only doing a couple cuttings this year and I'm around 45 or so rooting. I've failed again. LOL.

My mistake I'm tired today I meant to say 30 cuttings LOL oops. How about if I sent you a Del San Juame Gram from my home Orchard and something else you want?? LSU GOLD, HDA, THERMOLITO ETC, and pay all shipping cost??
