Plant Nutrients in Municipal Leaves

It’s the time of year to rid our lawns of fallen leaves and dispose of them curbside or we can elect to collect neighbors leaves and spread onto garden beds and create leaf piles. I’ve been collecting leaves for the last month and covering the garden with a several inches and piling the remainder in a leaf pen to create leaf mulch for use next Summer.

The attached fact sheet lists nutrient concentrations of collected fallen leaves in New Jersey and how you can use them in your garden. If you want to learn organic gardening methods and improving your soil, I recommend “I am organic gardening” on YT - all substance and no shtick.

Thank you for posting this. I've always wondered about using the leaves instead of throwing all that biomass away. It's great to have some data.

Could you share the pix of your leaf pen? Is Is just a gathering place for leaves, or do you do anything extra, like with composting?

The vegetable garden is full of whatever plant and flower debris my neighbor threw over the fence and topped with a few inches of leaves.

The pen is mainly shredded leaves, some ornamental grasses and coffee. The pile settled about 16” over the last 2-weeks. I still have a large pile that is covered with a tarp that I have to shred and top off the pen.
