Persimmon trees in Z6b or colder

Hi friends,

I plan on adding three persimmon trees to my yard in March 2025 (Astringent & non astringent).
We buy boxes of persimmons from Costco, wife and children like crunchy Fuyu (non astringent), and I prefer soft squishy Hashiya (astringent).

- American varieties are not an option (way too large for my yard).
- Asians will not survive Z6b - MA winters
- All hybrids are astringent.

Ichi Ki Kei Jiro is the hardiest Asian kaki and probably the only non astringent that may survive our winters (will probably need some protection during bad cold spells).

Any members have enough experience to share advice or suggestions? I would really appreciate it.

Thank you,

I want to add some, just other things ahead of them right now and space is still an issue unless I start clearing property.
That is something I am not about to start in the near future. lol
Next season I’m getting rid of most my tress and keeping 5 most favourite along with my inground should be enough figs for my family. I had way to much figs last season rats started invading. So I thought if I get rid of some I can add a potted persimmon 😀

That sounds like a pretty good idea, I still have quite a few I'm trying to aquire before I narrow way down.
But there my cherries and pears and paw paws that need ground space.
I'm not going nuts this cutting season...maybe a dozen.
I hope. 😂

Edible Landscaping has a beautiful video just on persimmon varieties. This should help you. I guarantee you will enjoy this. The picture looks black but tap on where it says watch on YouTube.

Hey! I’ve got a couple of Ichi Ki Kei Jiro trees, and they’ve done pretty well for me in a similar zone. Just make sure to give them some good winter protection, like mulch and maybe a burlap wrap during the harshest spells. They tend to be pretty resilient but can still get stressed in extreme cold. Also, planting in a spot that gets a lot of sun helps big time!
