Perlite of respectable size

For perlite- you want bigger and more coarse? I'm asking because the perlite in pro-mix hp looks pretty little to me. I didn't know about good potting mix and so my 5 earliest trees are in regular miracle grow potting soil. Is it best to wait till spring right before waking them up to re-pot? And do you still add extra perlite to pro-mix hp for trees that are going to stay in pots another year?

Generally speaking yes, more course is preferred by most. I'm guessing it's also more expensive which is why promix and sungro tend to use smaller mesh... but it's still chunky compared to cheaper mixes

Keep an eye out for when A.M. Leonard has their sales. Super course is around $33 a 4 Cu.Ft bag and course is around $28 a bag, FREE SHIPPING is typically their sale promotion..... but shipping on 4 or 5 bags can run more than the cost of the perlite itself. So when they have their sale, I load up for the year. Even though they have a couple of sales periods during the winter months.
That is a great deal on super coarse perlite. I got a bag this past spring. just make sure the bag says or indicates super coarse.

I don't think there is anything wrong with regular Miracle Grow potting mix for potted fig trees. I would use the Pro-Mix HP for rooting cuttings. When I use the MG potting mix for a potted fig tree, I add Perlite and worm castings. It works great for me. I don't ever use the MG moisure control potting mix, just the regular stuff.

Thanks, that’s really good to know. It gets pricey having to use promix for everything.

I use MG potting mix as well. Granted it’s only the first year, but my trees seem to do fine in it.

I goofed up and ordered a yard of garden mix instead of my usual potting mix. Both are nearly identical, except one has perlite and the other one doesn't.
Went to the local maryjuwanna grow supply store and found this amazing stuff. $47 (something like $30 USD) for 4cf. Figgin' A!

Wow! Great price. And I love the super course stuff.

I went to a farther Walmart, which, yes, their garden center is all Christmas stuff, but they still had the garden amendments, just that they moved it to another small area, a few shelves worth. The prices in the stores were significantly cheaper than what I had seen online, but I decided to go there anyway, and then the employee told me about the scanning thing.
Same thing with my Walmart. I got the big gallon of fish emulsion for $14 and I picked two of it.

You can produce your own promix by adding Mycorrhizae powder to the soil and root your cuttings. I did it and it worked for me and I will also add Mycorrhizae powder to my soil for rooting cuttings.
