Opinion Poll: Are There Too Many Fig Bloggers?

I just did a search out of curiosity to see what the most asked fig growing question is. In that search, up popped a ton of growing blogs, including many fig specific ones. Wow, have things changed since I started growing and it seems like many have tried to turn fig growing into a business.

What do you think?

1. Are too many people trying to monetize figs now?

Yes or no.

2. Are there too many fig bloggers now? Do you read these blogs?

Yes or no.

Please post your answers below, I didn’t see a poll option to use.

1. I would say no. Reason is I feel the more people trying to sell them. The more varieties will become easily available.
2. I don't watch them. But they may help some people. And some people enjoy them. They also bring more attention to the hobby. The only problem is sometimes the blogger does not do research before posting. So also no.

I only took a quick peek at a few, but that was something I noticed right off the bat.
That was one reason why I asked the question if there could be such a thing as too many when some of the information is not good. 🙃 Oh well.

No and No.

I look around my friends and family and I don't see many who are growing (good) figs or that know much about them.

I think there is a lot of potential value still out there in growing figs and all fruit.

We just have to bring in all of our friends and family (kicking and screaming) into the cult... errr, I mean

Share the Love BABY! :)

That is the nature of our times. Free speech + easy access to a megaphone. A key skill / habit to cultivate is to know your information source before giving value to the words.

I would say no to both.
With part 2, what would it matter if there were too many blogs? You would need to go to them for it to affect you. I think as some others have said, the problem is there are quite a few blogs from people with little to no experience, just repeating incorrect information they heard from somewhere. There can never be too many blogs by knowledgeable people that are sharing real experiences and information. In fact there are not enough good fig growers posting and discussing their growing experiences.
Also, some of these "blogs" that are lower quality copied information are only out there so that people can work the SEO (search engine optimization) system. Those blogs I could do without. Essentially flooding the internet with keywords in paragraphs lacking any information with the hope that a google will put their sales pages higher in the search rankings.

I only know of Ross's as well. I can't comment on either question as I don't read them, nor do I look for them. Especially now.... there just aren't enough hours in the day.

I think of many blogs as one person's opinion on things...just collected random information that may or may not be accurate or good advice. Not unlike some Youtube channels where often they just regurgitate nonsense as "fact" because they got it from another YouTuber or some other less than legitimate source.

Personally, I prefer community discussion. A group of people with similar interests.... learning through trial and error, sharing their experiences... where we can all fee safe to publish our failures as well as our successes, because our goal is not the same as that on a blog.

"I don't know everything there is to know about figs!" But I continue to learn something.... every single day because I'm in good company......" There you go... Get that statement from anyone on a blog or vlog :)

The question about too many is more about is it already flooded, is there a hole to fill with one, or is it better to look into other aspects where there could be a need? Because I saw quite a few blogs, but there are quite a lot of people saying they don’t read blogs or even know they exist.

People curiously seem to be taking that question in a funny way that I don’t mean. There can be too much of a good thing if you are someone who wants what you are doing to be worthwhile or successful. It’s like, what if there were 100s of fig forums? People would say a fig forum is a good thing, but in all seriousness, how could 100s really do well with just a small group of hobbyists. If effort is going to be put into something, I would want it to be something that can be useful or have a reach. Some may do it just for themselves, but it seems like a lot of work if no one is reading it.

I agree, there are not enough knowledgable people posting about their growing experiences. But how can you find those good sources if there are so many less qualified sources clouding it up? What makes a blog by a good grower stand out?

Yeah, the SEO thing seems to be an issue… another reason why I asked if there are too many blogs. Too much of the lower quality stuff it seems.
