Today I finished grafting 4 new verities & 2 existing ( to locate them to another tree) into my 3 in ground trees. Total grafts 11 because I did few backups for the new ones. Now its waiting time…

I am soooo interested in grafting! I think that is going to be a spring time chore for me to learn! I have a Brown Turkey tailor made for grafting 4 new trees!! I would appreciate any advice!! What technique do you prefer?

Technique depends on each situation. Your rootstock size, your scion stock, and how technical you want to get. When you’re ready post some pictures of what you want to graft onto what and we’ll be better able to help you.

I prefer cleft grafting because for me its the one I get most success in (about 50%) so that tells you I am not very proficient in grafting either. You have to try many methods and find the one you feel comfortable in. Each person is different but you have to get you feet wet, the only way to learn. Good luck and share some pics with us when you graft this year

Will do!! Another question though. In east Texas it is already warming up. My potted fig trees are beginning to wake up. When is the best time to start a graph? I would assume soon as the tree begins to wake up?

This is all truth!! I don’t know much about grafting but I see sooo many different techniques. I do think I will have to try lots and then figure out which I like best, which is easiest, and which is most successful. I foresee a fun summer ahead of me!! Lol!!

Yes, wakeup. As soon as buds start swelling if you need a visual indicator. Bud swell indicates sap flow.
