Know your roots?

So last season I had rooted and grown out a Sister Madeline's Yellow cutting. By the end of the season, I was so underwhelmed, in every aspect about the plant, that I chop it down to below the soil line.

Fast forward to this spring, I had a little change of heart over winter, and decided to remove what was left of SMY from it's container, to re-use the soil elsewhere. To my surprise the rootball still looks very healthy. I cannot see any visible nodes on the older part of the buried cutting, or some of the newer growth that was lopped off, but want to try this variety in ground.

My question is as follows:

If the roots are indeed alive and there are no visible nodes, will this rootball be able to push growth from the root ball, despite not having spring vegetation,to help with energy needs through photosynthesis?

I have had trees grow from the roots.
Many people say you need a node.
I don't think that is so.

Thanks for your input. I just don't want to put it in ground, if there is absolutely no chance of regrowth. I guess we shall see. I can't put it back in a container, because they container is going to be for a new variety.
