Jujube tree

@Inflorescence saw this video today and the man mentioned something very interesting I wanted to share with you and anyone else who might also find interesting. One way to pollinate them without buying another tree is if the rootstock sends a sucker it’s a different variety than the variety that’s grafted. So instead of digging out the sucker let at least one of them stay and grow and that sucker will pollinate the tree.

Teresa that is ingenious solution, of course you better stay on the pruning or the root stock will completely dominant given enough time.

That is a really great idea! The only thing is sometimes the rootstock on commercial trees is something related enough for the graft to take, but not actually compatible for pollinating. But if it is compatible, that would be an easy way to handle it. Thanks for sharing!

I bought Autumn Beauty last year which is supposed to be a better tasting with larger fruits vs the li and Shanxi li and lang... and plus is more of a colu.nar form maybe good for pollinating some varietie the rest i have are highly rated but smaller fruits

Unfortunatley most of them send alot of suckers... from one seller did i get varieties on rootstock that did not sucker the first year though they did form basal branches.. one of them i grafted onto since the scion croaked but I think the roots are Li or Dhanzi Li or Lang the bark is reddish color... and another plant i got had no or minimal suckers... but the Autumn Beauty from a reputable place made three very thorny suckers that appear to be the Indian Jujube possibly, very thorny and that could be a mess in time

Since Autumn Beauty made so many sucker i decided best to let it grow bigger In a pot and graft onto the others ... since it's more dwarfed and also since jujubes can grow huge over time i think it would make a good top leader on other varieties to keep them smaller and the top more narrow

In another forum I posted an article discussing pollination... apparently there are two schedules... some jujubes that open and disburse pollen earlier and some later and maybe they overlap.. also there could be variances with the larger fruited or late varieties vs the smaller fruited ones that can fruit all year long , 2-3x in hitter climates ...

and so a match that will do the same is probably helpful a little but probably best to know a good match or maybe there are some that just work all around

Here is Autumn Beauty... after a year or so in a pot i have 4 ground suckers from underneath the soil ... and a fifth frim the base. they are thorny to the max

This is another i bought grafted. It only has basal pups from the rootstock. I'm pretty sure it would sucker also overtime but maybe not ... but i think much better to grow these and or graft other vsrities to base trunks vs the inevitable from some of the stock varities

Note that the leaves on the suckering rootstock have a different look probably i think they are the Indian variety and maybe raised because they mass produce alot of suckers thst can be used as stock but in the yard that means regular maintenance ... unfortunatley there aren't mentions of named stock only one i think that is easy to root
