I know it is a long shot…anyone have any of the BM types grafted available (BM, BM kk, MIB, Preto, etc).

let me know what you’ll need to part ways with it

thanks in advance

Grafted is a good call. I had challenges rooting BMKK. Definitely easier to layer. Around here most trees won't be making their spring appearance until probably March. If you're not successful by then, check back later when the north east figs are waking up. These shouldn't be too difficult to find then.

WHAT exactly are you looking for ?sion wood (cuttings) or grafted trees ??????

Good news on these. I decided to cut my side branches from BMKk and Cravens Craving ... and to root them... a. To grow new ones on their own roots and also for extra material to do grafting experiments with onto various stocks... reading around i saw where several people described them as being a challenge to root... I water rooted and in just under a month I see roots on a BMKk and also on a CC... easy as any to root from fresh cuttings

It maybe that they don't store well or for long or maybe more temperature sensitive than alot of the fig varieties but from the tree to water was easy in stable temps. I kept the further from the window in case they might extra sensitive

It’s not a rooting issue. I actually have a BMkk Inground, they all just to seem to have mediocre (at best) root vigor, leading to poor top growth. The poor desert soil I grow in surely is no help either…so a root stock is being sought

YOUR BEST SHOT: With the BLACK MADERIA type figs is to graft to vigorus root stock and not root them ! EASY OR HARD to root is not the issue ! the issue is they grow very slowly on there own roots!! GET some sions of BM types ,ie FIGO PRETO,BLACK MADERIA ,MADERI ISLAND BLACK .AND GO TO LOCAL NURSERY AND BUY SOME VIGOURUS 5 GALLON FIG TREES WITH DIAM SAME AS YOUR SIONS AND WHIP & TOUNGH GRAFT THEM (ONE GRAFT PER TREE). PUT IN SHADY AREA AND KEEP FROM DRYING OUT .AFTER YOU HAVE GOOD BASKET BALL SIZE LEAF GROWTH CUT OF GRAFTING RUBBER BANDS RE WRAP WITH STREACHY GRAFTING TAPE AND STAKE TREE/GRAFT FOR STREANTH .DO THIS VERY/VERY CAREFULLY SO YOU DO NOT BREAK GRAFT ,THEN JUST GROW THE TREE AND LEAVE WRAPINGS ALONE TO FALL OFF ON THERE OWN SLOWLY MOVE INTO SUN.

This is interesting. With my 10 gal BMKK I would say the tree grows fine but the production is meagre and slow to ripen. I have limited grafting experience. Are you suggesting that one can expect the tree will ripen earlier on a better rootstock? I’d definitely like to get more BM’s ripening

From what i can see they are very late to ripen either way ,may be a week or to faster on grafts vers own roots ,but not signifigant .BUT growing in ground the difference in vegitative growth is 3 to 4 fold more on grafts . Either way all my B.M. TYPES ARE NOT MAJOR FRUIT PRODUCERS ( EACH FRUIT AVERAGE 4-6" APART ).AND I HAVE :FIGO PRETO,MADERA ISLAND BLACK,CRAVENS CRAVING,COURNEL LIPTONS BLACK CROSS AND BLACK MADRIA .

I am definitely trying to create my own grafted BM types and I did exactly what FiG Gazer suggested…just hope my grafting skills are sufficient. I am also planting SEVERAL in ground because here in AZ it outperforms other “premium” types. there isn’t a premium type more proven in AZ than the BMs…I will be trying a bunch of others too as either grafts or trees.

@TorontoJoe I have an inground BM kk(4-5 years old, but just 1 year in ground). It’s weak as hell despite being babied…unless it improves massively this year, I’m going out of my way to rip it out and replace it with a grafted version.

Harvey’s videos of the differences are crazy (think the video is of Preto), the grafted versions are younger but like 5x larger than the ungrafted versions planted right next to it.
