Is something attacking my Jujube tree?

After I up potted my 2 plants this morning I did a walk around the yard. While looking at the Jujube tree I dropped my phone. When I bent down to pick it up I saw this at the bottom of the trunk. Any ideas?
The tree looks perfectly healthy up top so far. The last picture is of a hole the size of a nail hole. Looks like 2 holes one on top of another.

How old is that damage, could it have been from last fall? Is there any deer around?

Is there any chance that there are insect borers in your part of Virginia Teresa?

They don't have to be the work of Ambrosia beetles ... but unfortunately the little buggers are active in your area. There's a lot of rough bark over that trunk so it might not present itself stereotypically. I would ask our moderators who have more experience with the Enemy

Rabbits (and deer) are known to gnaw on the bark of young jujubes, especially when there’s not much else to eat (like in winter). I would cover the damage with sealant and then put one of those spiral plastic tree protectors on it. When I planted a pear last fall, I made a plastic protector out of a cut down black pot and duct tape that protects the trunk to about 30 inches. The deer gnawed the limbs but trunk is ok. Once it’s older and the bark gets thick and coarse they usually give up.

Deer also scrape their antlers on small trees causing damage that looks like that, but they don't do it this time of the year.
