Indoor Growing

I am starting to grow figs indoors. I got another grow light today. These are full spectrum LED lights. I can get a couple more lights and clear out more room for figs. I can add shelves for rooted cuttings. My plan is to grow a few of my 1st year fig trees indoors and also start propagating cuttings soon and grow them indoors until spring. I also have some late fig trees that have not started to ripen figs yet. We have a long season here but I saw that the weather report says it will be in the 70's in the day and lows will be in the 50's. I am wondering at what point will the figs ripen better indoors at a constant 68-70 F, than outdoors with the lows in the 50's. As it gets colder, when should I bring them in? Will they ripen outdoors when the highs are in the 60's and lows in the 40's?

I can’t wait to see this room in March. I’m guessing it’ll look a lot different.

I’ll set the over/under at 5.5 lights and I’ll be taking the over.

To answer your question - I still have figs ripening with daytime temperatures in the 60s and nighttime temperatures in the lower to mid 40s, but it takes them longer to swell, color and ripen. Not sure if increased temperatures with lower intensity lighting will speed things up.

I have this lamp that I turned into a grow light yesterday. It had one light on a flexible post but the other post was not flexible. I made it flexible and I found these LED grow bulbs at Lowes for $6 or $7 each. I still need to get one more of them.

I like your rigging.
Thanks. I watched a couple episodes of MacGuyver and went ham in my garage looking for anything I could use to hang the lights from (the lights are new thanks to recommendations from @Bofig and @MattK). Two amazing resources to mention addition to searching through older posts here!

I told myself I’d jump out of the airplane and Fig-ure it out on my way down.

Nice! Those are two really good varieties as well. Nice setup.

I have ripened all the remaining figs in the garage couple years ago with just shop lights and heater. The temperature is best around 68F but anything above 60F is good enough. You may need to adjust the distance between the lights and the canopy over time. Your plants will tell you if you don't have enough lights (it would start dropping leaves or having leggy growth). Or you can use a light meter/app to check. I started moving the plants inside when night time temperature was below 55F or the average temp was below 60F.

Once the plants were done with the fruits, I turned off the lights and let them go dormant. Because we have a long enough season, so there is no need to give them headstart. I prefer the trees start in spring naturally but of course, I have rooted and grown cuttings in winter many times. I also prefer the fruits ripen in cooler temperature than the ones in scourging hot summer in Texas. I actually delay the fruit ripening so I get the better quality fruits.

If she gives you a hard time……tell her you’re FAR from crazy…..

Cool indoor room! I want to do an indoor room, but I’m worried about the cat pee smell wafting through the house like mothers have mentioned.
Do you find that to be an issue? What do you do to ameliorate it?

I don’t find that fig leaves smell like cat pee. They have their own scent for sure but I find it to be a sweet smell. Not an amonia or abrasive scent. The room is ventilated through the window (think bathroom ventilation fan). And is not attached to the full house HVAC system.
