I want to hear from you...

As this forum has developed it's become clear that we need to establish some sticky sections on specific topics so members can easily access info on specific topics. I have a few in mind and I'm not exactly sure how to lay it out yet... but before I do anything I want to hear from the our members.

I was thinking:

-Propagation (include rooting cuttings, layering, TC etc)
-Winter protection (obviously for those in colder zones but a common topic of discussion)
-BFF for our friends in Cali and the Mediterranean

I want to make it easy for those seeking information on specific topics... but at the same time not splinter the fig discussion so much that certain forums are not visited.

One thing to keep in mind is that these sections are very important on a forum where the search doesn't work. The search tool on FF is quite good so not as much need to have categories for every little thing.... At least I think

This is why I defer to you...

Please let me know what you think.

Thanks for all of the work you put into this. I think it is great that you want input, I'm still figuring out how to find things in the format, "search" has been pretty responsive for me so far, so yay, but I think it may be good to have threads that are searchable like you mentioned. Looking forward to whatever you decide to create for us, again, Thank you!

Maybe a section for Pests in general could include many things, that are meaningful to all fig growers. Treatments and areas where the pests are a problem ( like the borers in some areas) could also help new figsters. I hope the "silba adipata Mcalpine" ( aka "Black Fig Fly") , doesn't spread far, so that people need to be looking it up, unfortunately spreading into Northern California so I suspect Arizona, Nevada, and possibly even other states with colder winters may also be seeing them. There was actually talk of the Spotted Lanternfly in my area last year, and I almost killed a checkerspot butterfly the other day over reacting that it may be the dreaded "spotted lanternfly". I need to do some studying so I don't kill the good insects. California has been having a terrible time with fruit flies the last few years, and even had some new introductions from other countries, so may be good for everyone to start hearing about them, in case they show up in other states ( only a matter of time). Los Angeles just ended their experience of having not one, not two but 6 different quarantines for fruit flies! Crazy!

One thing people need to know about the silba adipata, is that it can be controlled, although it may be more difficult in a suburban environment and if your neighbors don't take it seriously it will affect you. ( And your figs!)

I'll try to think of ideas for you! Applause

A "Recipes" thread could also be fun, you may have one, have not looked yet, I have something to add if you do.

I see a lot of questions from new members asking about feeding recipes and schedules.
This could be added to propagating and cuttings possibly.
I like the suggestions coming in, some of the same things I would like to see.

Up potting advice, airlaying, fertilizer/soil media, variety verifying (leaves//fruit) Different results in different regions, pests insect/leaf Rust/bacteria/mold vs pest rodents, irrigation/water, cold Hardy figs & Splitters in wet regions. Pruning/root pruning. Grow & show those honestly worth bragging about 😝 I usually just search in the bar but these are often topics that come up a lot.
