Next question is. Can you mask the ethanol so you don't attract the beetle's?

YES! At least that's exactly why I started using pruning paint when notching. I took heavy ambrosia beetle damage a few years before I figured this out. Since starting the practice of sealing wounds I haven't had a single borer beetle issue. I don't think you need to use "pruning paint" but anything to cover the wound wound will prevent attracting them.

I'd bet you a dollar (A real US dollar... not the Canadian kind) that if you sealed all you'd basically rid yourself of this one pest issue.
