Haskaps

Is there a better berry? I don't know. I love berries. I love a good strawberry, raspberry, currant, gooseberry, etc.. I suppose I like them all. Wild blueberries, especially European wild blueberries, are insanely good. Storebought ones here don't come even close. Haskaps do, IMHO. I'd say they are even better. I love them. I let them ripen to perfection. I pick them by gently shaking the bushes and picking up only the ones that fall... That's when they are perfectly ripe. Perfect balance of sweet and tart. Immense depth of flavor. I love them. My kids and I made some chocolate-covered home-grown strawberries, figs, and haskaps. Holy cow. So good!

Almost 2 1/2 lbs today. Nice haul!

Nice looking berries.

I’ve never tried them or heard of them before your posts. How large do the plants get? How many years to fruit bearing?
Mine are in their 2nd and 3rd year. I got them as tiny plants, I'd say in their second year, or they were grown over winter. All of them started producing the following year after I got them. Productivity is about a small handful to a cup in the second year. The 3rd year plants this summer produced on average over a lb per plant. Mature plants, according to Google can produce 6-10 lbs per plant, with some varieties up to 15. I have yet to see how true that is. I visited a haskap farm near where I live, spoke to the farmer, he was very nice to give me a tour. His were in their 4th year and he was getting 1.5 to 2.5 lbs per plant that year, depending on variety. His were in the ground, mine are in 20 gallon cedar containers. Will see how they do once they mature, which is by year 5-7. Size-wize, they grow upright and can reach 6-8 feet. Haskaps also make really good wine... thought I'd mention as I know you are a wine maker like me. That farmer, his wife actually, also makes wine for sale. I got a few bottles last time I visited. Good stuff.

That is awesome! Now my patience is waning to taste the ones I planted this spring. What would you say typical total harvest is per plant at this point. Thanks for posting this 🙂

I planted 3 varieties this spring

Yezberry Maxie
Yezberry Solo
Blue Hakkaido

2 of my 3 varieties where originally bred domestically with genetic material that had naturalized in Japan, but no doubt, made it's way down from Siberian origins at some point. The latter, Blue Hakkaido, is apparently a favorite in Japan for culinary purposes.

That sounds familiar, I believe I read that somewhere.
It's been a few years since I attempted growing then.
Sucks, they look so good. lol
I think probably too hot for us in zone 8a to grow. From research I did they prefer cold climates.
I even contemplated whether I should try growing them here in 6A because I would read about them doing ok for one person and then being a total failure for another person. I think you are right, zone 8 would be a 🤏 too warm.

😲 That's like over a kilo! So nice!

You actually sold me on this one when you were describing it a while ago.... I have some questions if you don't mind

How big does the plant get?

Do you have to prune it back much?

Is that bowl from one plant?

How much of a season's harvest would that represent?

At some point would you mind posting a close up pic of a sliced cross-section?

Where did you get yours? I want to go where you went

That looks like a a very impressive berry. This was my year to start berries. I got Saskatoon, Prime Ark and Strawberries in the grown so far.

That is a book of questions.

I have grown them in zone 6a. Low to zero production in the first 2 years(had 1 or 2 berries). And then, both disappeared in the third spring. I didn't protect them because they are pretty cold tolerant. I suspect something took them or the ice/snow crushed them, hopefully, that wasn't me. I planted 2 of them up high in a rocky area near the woods with lots of leaf mulch. Maybe I should have them in pots.
