Has anybody been successful growing blueberries in containers?

I've tried the hortblue petite. A small but very tasty blueberry that is supposed to do well in containers, but sadly not for me. I have also tried Southern Highbush blueberry that do well in Southern California. It must be a part of California that I do not reside in. There are several blueberries that are also supposed to do well in California, the only one I tried was Sunshine Blue, but I didn't have much luck with it...

Maybe some of our other members have had more luck with this delicious Fruit that I have.

There was a dude in Mira Mesa growing blueberries in pots on 0urfigs...

Figbert, I remember he had blueberries in pots.

@"ZomVee"#10 . Good to see you man. Could you do me a favor and repost your RKN story from Southern CA. You were telling me a back story that was fascinating. I know Bushdoctor82, and the entire membership would love to hear this story.

@"ZomVee"#10 thanks for the Mira Mesa tip on Figbert... BTW that's a great name, I don't know why I had to go ahead, and pick Figless as a name? What's up with that???

I used to, friend of mine sells BB...guy has BB bushes 30' tall and 15' around. :D

We bought several from him, left them in pots for the first year, but after that in ground.
Love me some BBs.

@"GoodFriendMike"#9 I am using an acid mix that is close to Gary from Laguna Hills nurseries acid mix formula. Perhaps a 4 1/2 to 5 pH...

@"ktrain"#2 .. 30 ft tall by 15 ft wide . WOW what variety of blueberry you growing? Can you share any more blueberry details with us? I'd love to see some pictures. Kevin everything seems to grow better in Georgia.

Well maybe a slight exaggeration on the size...but they are 6-7' tall and very wide.
I wish I had pics of them.
We plan to get more come spring and plant them all over.
Mine are no where near as tall and lush as his.
BB pancakes are one of my weaknesses. lol

Ya know, they make specific fertilizer for Blueberry. And you can find a potting mix made for plants like Blueberries too.
But my mom grew her Blueberry in a pot for a few years and it did amazing. I don't even remember what potting mix she used, but it wasnt anything expensive. The one thing about it that stands out was, the plant only got around 4-5 hours direct sun and part of that (1hr) was early morning before it got hot, and the rest was mid-day heat. So direct sun was limited. I see I'm ground blueberries in all day direct sun 😎 but that tree did great and is loaded with blueberries every year. It was in a large pot though, maybe ten gallon. One of those faux barrel pots , maybe a little bigger than ten gallon but I think ten is pretty close.

Monrovia Sunshine Blue was bred for less acidic soils. Try it in a mix of 1/2 composted greenery waste (or Kellogg's Patio Plus), 1/4 general purpose sand, and 1/4 1/4" orchid bark. In California, place outdoors in a location that receives morning sun only. Expect reliable crops after 3-4 years of healthy growth.

@"Charlie Dodgson"#164. Wow congratulations on just joining figfanatic.com yesterday, and writing nine posts in your first day. You are a superstar new member of FF team. If you don't mind I'm going to like every one of those nine posts today
Applause :) okay back to blueberries. I quoted you below.

 • Charlie I will definitely try Sunshine Blue. I usually adjust my pH to fit the type of plant variety I'm growing. I like to mix my potting soil to a varieties needs, but then try to adjust the water, and fertilizer solution to the plants exact specification. You're clearly a very good Gardner with two green thumbs. Including blueberries would you please share some of the plant varieties you are growing?

@"GoodFriendMike"#9 have you met our new member @"Charlie Dodgson"#164?

@"Smokymist"#159. As you may have read above I too have been having some difficulties growing blueberries in containers. Though I keep giving it my very best try I am often unsuccessful growing my favorite Berry here in Berkeley CA. I would think Tennessee would be a great place to grow blueberries? Let's both keep trying. What other plant varieties are you growing? Also how are you doing with your fig tree home Orchard??

@"Southeast Figs"#77  Thank you so much for giving me this information. I did not know that there were specific fertilizers for growing blueberries. Maybe that is why I have not had as much success as I would like with this extremely popular acid loving Berry. It's clear you have your blueberry in a good spot for its growing success. You get some Morning Sun on your blueberry, and you're not in direct sun all day. What other plant varieties are you growing?

@"Charlie Dodgson"#164 . My new friend I looked, and looked. I decided the name I most Wanted yours to be was Charles Lutwidge Dodgson. He was a mathematician a Poet, Photographer, and Anglican deacon. He also may have done a little writing. Maybe you could give me a hint? Since it's unlikely that you're that Charles Dodgson.

@"Figless"#18
You are correct. I'm not that Charles Dodgson but it is his name I've chosen for my screen name. Part of the reason is the wonderful paper he wrote on matrix determinants.

I see you are in Berkeley. My younger daughter has a home there about a half mile from Grizzly Peak.

I lived very close to Euclid, and Grizzly Peak, for several years, it's a beautiful area. I have a wife I'm still rather fond of who lives in that area. I currently reside a couple of blocks from Sather Gate, with a home Orchard consisting of my hand built Greenhouse, and over 200 fig trees. Maybe the next time you're in our area you could be my guest here. We have a group of figfanatic members, and ficus carica enthusiast who sometimes gather at my house. You would be most welcome.

Matrix determinants. Is a very interesting subject, and also very timely. Especially as we approach the voting season. Did this influence your choice of a figfanatic name? Or did you refer to matrix determinants in some other fashion?

I first studied Dodgson's paper in the 1970's. Back then, discussion forums were implemented by Unix newsgroups. This is not the first time I've used this screen name. 🙂

I had a couple, powder and pink lemonade.  I bought them small and kept them in pots for about 3 yrs and I got blueberries from them.  We moved into our house and planted them in ground.  Since then I have gotten some others but they are all in ground.
