Grafting

Started practice today. VDB on 4 new rooted cuttings, should I cut off the root stocks green new grow brunches? Ideally to keep both varieties on one tree just in case some of the 4 poor cuttings survive.
Yes, pretty dangerous, I am not going to continue practice until my 🧤 arrival.

Wait for the grafts to heal. But to get them to push their buds you might have to eventually remove the other growth. Now if new growth pushes below them from the other variety you could keep that.
But especially bud grafts will just sit there if there is active growth above them.

Good to know, thank you!

I like to secure my grafts tight with rubber bands, strings, etc. Parafilm is likely enough, but I like many locations of the bud or other graft squeezed onto the rootstock firmly. Looks great. Good luck!

Thank you for sharing!
I tied one cutting with clear fishing line underneath buddy tape, an other one with zip tie outside. Rest Chip-Bud Graftings without anything else. Should I reinforce with zip tie outside with the rest two?

They are probably fine. I’ve reinforced both on top of and underneath parafilm. It didn’t matter. But you should remove it after it’s taken well to ensure it doesn’t strangle the new growth or doesn’t rot (if you are using anything that can rot to tie it off). Personally, I’d do it because that’s the way I roll. Like I said I’ve done it both ways but “tight enough” (whatever that means) cambium contact is important.

I use electrical tape to reinforce the grafts works great. I tape it for 2 seasons at least.
Ordered some electrical tape Monday from lows, got email says Estimated Pickup Date: Feb. 4, 2025, should just run to any store to get one.
I will do that asap. Thanks for your tip: tape it >=2seasons if any of them survive. Keep finger crossed for. Will follow!

It always worked out for me and I’ve done multiple grafts.
