Gopher attack

I had a gopher eat a couple of my fig trees a few weeks back. I noticed today that the gopher was back, and he ate one of the trees I replanted after the first one was eaten!

Time to put down some gopher punishment. I got these really cool gopher traps and I set them up in the gopher tunnels. Wish me luck.

I’ve got a terrible mole problem and was going to try some traps like these. Looking forward to the results.

Sadly, I'm not allowed to use those on raccoons....

.... but, if I were trying to deal with gohpers, and somehow raccoons stepped into a, "larger, meaner gophinator"... would that be my fault? 🤔 Hmmmmm

What can you use on raccoons? Can you use dog proof? Those are the most selective traps for coons man can buy. Iowa placed basically open season on them a few years back I believe due to overpopulation.

Toronto is the raccoon center of the universe. Insanely overpopulated and protected. They don't only take fruit... they destroy the plants like smelly, furry locust. They're very smart. I personally feel they should be dealt with as pests, but... The only legal action I can take to trap and relocate them.... very, VERY often. They're native here but the population is not natural. They've adapted to urban living and have been noted to experience type 2 diabetes and obesity... not something that should occur in a "wild" animal.

For now... I trap, and move... trap, and move and repeat. My neighbours were so pleased they've offered gas money for my troubles....Of course I declined... now they just leave bottles of vino at my front door.

that is funny!
Back to gophers (my #1 nemesis). I had a better luck with Gopherhawk traps. They are a bit pricy but very effective and lethal if you set them right. They also provide a visual sign when they fire.
Available at Amazon.

good luck.

Dang! that sucks.

I hate to be a repeater but.....It's always something!
Hope you rid yourself of that issue before the loss of anymore trees.

Do the moles do any harm to your plants?
They don’t eat the plants but in their quest for food they tear up the roots of anything in their way. I’ve lost entire raspberry patches from them. Trees usually don’t suffer much because they go around. I have caught a few plants as they start wilting and saved them but it’s tough.

Hate you lost figs Pete but glad you got them or at least one of the culprits!! I lost a couple so far this year from a raccoon. The squirrels keep messing with them too but so far haven't been as destructive. So far......

A thought just occurred to me… Buffalo Squirrel, taste just like chicken (so I hear). Cook up a-mess ‘of’um, just don’t tell anyone what it really is. Hot sauce makes everything taste good.
