Thanks for posting this. It was interesting to read that burying plants in crushed leaves kept the plants quite warm but seemed to make them more susceptible to vole damage.

I find Voles are easier to deal with than harsh winter conditions in MA. Although both can be detrimental unless dealt with beforehand (in my garden, measures and preparations are in place, for winter, by early December)
For voles:
sprinkling Cayenne pepper (preferably flakes); spraying the tree trunk with ready to use vole deterrents, surround trunk with metal mesh.
