Getting Ready for 2025

This year is almost over so I am planning ahead for 2025.  I have purchased some new pots this week.  I tried the 10 gallon white square ones and two of the 6 sent were damaged in transit.  I don't understand why the pots are not wrapped in bubble wrap or have some styrofoam to keep them from being damaged.  Because of that I decided to bite the bullet and buy some resin whiskey barrels.  At least I know they will last at least 5-6 years in the sun. My husband is adding drainage holes today to the pots purchased.

Next will be coco coir and perlite.  Last year I tried to buy some in February/March and the less expensive items were sold out.  By the time I do root pruning in January/February. I WILL BE READY. I have been watching for fertilizer to go on clearance and so far no luck. Osmocote Plus is on my wish list.

If you see good deals on whatever a fig grower could use, please pass it on.

I admire your energy to start planning this early. Sounds like a good plan.
My plan now is to buy a power pruner and maybe a heavy-duty power saw :) It has been a good season but too much work than I can afford to sustain.

The thing I am worried about are prices.  I used to buy perlite at Home Depot for $17.95 or so.  Now $26.97 for a 2 cf bag.  Coco coir was $11 or less for a 11 pound brick. Now $16.67. Prices will eventually go up. Also those supplies are shipped free to my home. Can't beat that. That stuff is heavy when you buy in bulk so delivering to my house vs. driving and lugging it to the garage works for me. lol

@LadyGT . Don't give all your business to home creepo. I'm willing to bet you have wonderful hydroponic stores with far superior perlite for your purposes. I was in the indoor gardening game so far back that we bought our Home Depot perlite for $12.95 a 4 cubic ft green bag it was never anywhere as good as the #4 perlite at the hydroponics store. Even here in Berkeley CA the weather is taking a sharp fall/winter turn it's getting very cold and dormancy may be coming much sooner than we had planned for. Of course the best Hydroponic prices are probably in Los Angeles. We will be buying a couple of cubic yards of pumice coming up since we were lucky enough to have sourced it.

Figless, there are no hydroponic stores in my town. To find one, I would have to drive to metro Atlanta and I avoid doing that as much as possible. To do so, one would have to deal with bumper to bumper traffic or a good chance of getting close to being in an accident. The stress is not worth it.

@LadyGT. I'm very sorry to hear that it's such a long road trip for you. I just sometimes worry about Home Depot perlite because perlite #1 and#2 .Can actually be water, and moisture retentive, rather than improve drainage. In ourfigs forum @Costa was getting a $40 4 cubic foot price delivered. In Berkeley we're seeing prices as high $40 for perlite #4 in 4 cubic feet packages. The only case I can make for a price as high as that is it will not break down over many many years. I'm still using soil mixes that are 8 years old with great drainage.

I hear you on the current prices. Keep an eye out over the next several months at big box stores for items on clearance. Last year I picked up 2cf blocks of ProMix for $2.25.

I’m reseeding sections of my lawn now and used up all the delivered topsoil and have resorted to using the ProMix to topdress.

Definitely a great time to be on the lookout for discounts and deals. Although I haven’t been seeing many deals yet this year.
