Garlic.... it's always first to show!

Are those 5 gallon grow bags? Do you plant in the fall and leave the bags out all winter? I like this idea!
Yes, they’re 5-gallon grow bags. I originally thought I’d be moving these around my yard to deter pests, but I harvest them around the 4th of July before the figs ripen.

Having the garlic in grow bags is still useful—they are stored in the shed until the fall so I have more room for 3-gallon figs. They come out in the fall when I plant garlic again.

I was wondering the same thing....

They freeze solid in the shed? I would have thought that would be too cold...

Anyone else seeing their garlic come up? I have to check but I think it's earlier than in recent years.

The chicken wire is to keep the squirrels from digging up the beds. That's going to have to come off soon.

Yeah my garlic is popping up too. I use the same trick to keep those darn squirls away, nothing worse that going to check on the garden and there are little holes dig with the bulbs laying there

I cut my scapes around June 1. I make a garlic scape pesto with them using this recipe:

This pesto is great for easy meals. Saute some shrimp put it on top of pasta tossed in this pesto, and you’ve got a tasty quick meal.

I’ve been making batches of pesto the last few weeks with my basil plants and freezing in ice cube trays for portioning. I may have to try growing garlic next season.
